Good. Freedom to leave is the greatest freedom of them all.

Reducing medical aid in dying won't result in fewer deaths, but more suicides.

If that's someone's choice then the state has no business getting in the way.

I agree. So let's make it with dignity and as less pain as possible.

$1:
The Canadian government has put forward a bill to make medically-assisted death available to people who are not terminally ill.
Oh, I get it!
Suicide is illegal!

Yup. That's all that matters. And boot the churches out of the way too because their interference is not required or wanted in the slightest.

IIRC there were people on here who told us this would never happen? So, what's next from the Liberal gov't? The Dutch method where 16 year old drama queens can decide to end their life because they're stressed out or depressed. So rather than try and save a life we'll just help end one because it's easier and less expensive.

$1:
Euthanasia and minors
Minors may themselves request euthanasia from the age of 12, although the consent of the parents or guardian is mandatory until they reach the age of 16. Sixteen and seventeen-year-olds do not need parental consent in principle, but their parents must be involved in the decision-making process. From the age of 18, young people have the right to request euthanasia without parental involvement.

I'm not opposed to euthanasia but the lowering of the standards to be met is more than a little disconcerting especially when you get to the stage where a doctor can arbitrarily make the decision for a semi conscious person that they should still be euthanized.

$1:
Guidelines for euthanasia of semi-conscious patients
Sometimes, a patient may lapse into semi-consciousness just before a scheduled euthanasia. If there are still signs of suffering, the doctor may perform euthanasia despite the patient’s lowered consciousness. This is laid down in guidelines on the subject prepared by the Royal Dutch Medical Association at the request of the Board of Procurators General of the Public Prosecution Office and the Healthcare Inspectorate. These guidelines on euthanasia of patients with lowered consciousness do not represent any implicit relaxation of the law; they are merely designed to provide guidance for physicians in this difficult situation.

https://www.government.nl/topics/euthan ... on-request.

Although I do love the double speak that says, this regulation isn't a relaxation of the guidelines but to provide guidance for physicians. I'd say it's pretty explicit that if you as a doctor decide to carry out euthanasia on a semi conscious patient nothing will happen to you for doing it.

This is an interesting read and seems to be where we're headed.

Yup, the term slippery slope may be an understatement.

This isn’t a slippery slope. When the gov first legalized MAID, they deliberately held back on some provisions that MAID advocates asked for, with a promise to review after 5 years

Quit trying to run other people’s lives and telling them how to live (or die). It’s none of your business and you don’t know these people’s needs better than they do.

Aside from the obvious necessary requirement of ensuring that someone isn't being coerced into signing off on the final approval for self-termination there should be no other regulations involved at all. NO ONE ELSE HAS THE RIGHT TO DECIDE AT ALL.

Tired of seeing depression being sloughed off as being no more severe than a common cold. In fact it's as deadly as any other condition when left to fester. Maybe even worse because it literally sucks all the joy out of living and leaves the sufferer with nothing but a numbness that never stops. It can't be cured, it can barely be made tolerable through increasing dosages of medication. It's not a joke and needs to no longer be seen as such.

If you don't have it then don't presume to preach at those who do. You have no idea what it's like and you'll be fucking lucky if you never will.

I'm not trying to run other peoples lives, I'm pro euthanasia but I'm anti gov't regulating euthanasia which is a big fucking difference. What was once a personal decision is quietly being taken out of the clients hands.

So, If you want to off yourself it's your prerogative and as the matter of fact I'd applaud your decision just don't start demanding that someone "has to bake your cake" just because they don't agree with your beliefs and demands.

The problem with euthanasia is, when it becomes gov't run, it slowly goes from a personal choice to a bureaucratic decision. As the matter of fact we've already had gov'ts running medical murder facilities and they got to that point by taking the step from Eugenics to mandatory euthanasia.

So let's be honest here. When a gov't becomes involved in pretty much any personal choices it always goes to shit and as you know or should know gov'ts will always take the easy and cheap way out rather than trying to fix the problems.

So if that problem is a depressed 12 year old girl, or a patient who made a not well thought out decision about suicide but can't change their mind because of a medical condition, someone else is now in charge no matter what these people want at the present moment.
