Has literally nothing to do with what I just said.

Has everything to do with what you wrote.

You drive for traffic conditions, not because everybody is doing it. If that means you drive 10, 20 even 50 under the speed limit, so be it. If you don't, you end up in the ditch with everyone else.

Clearly we aren't talking about a blizzard.

Also, you'd find that during a blizzard, everyone is driving under the speed limit. And that driving substantially slower than them in the middle of a blizzard is still more dangerous.

Obstructing the flow of traffic causes unnecessary lane changes, causes road rage, and just generally fucks everything up. If people are going to drive slower than semis, they need to get off the fucking road.

I wasn't either. It was just the easiest relevant image I had. It could be fog, rain, thunderstorms, stampeding rabbits, snow snake migration, whatever. You drive for conditions, not to keep up with traffic.

And you just demonstrated how road rage begins. If everyone drove according to THE LAW, and if everyone knew THE LAW, then everyone's driving would be predictable. Predictable means safe. I do this all the time on a track. The least predictable person out there is the least safe, and will have an accident. I post pictures all the time of cars that are upside down, because someone rear ended them, or decided to pass on the wrong corner. We put a big orange triangle on the cars of first year drivers for exactly this reason.

If the truck driver is speeding, that's who needs to be dealt with. If a vehicle can't maintain a posted minimum speed, then they need to be dealt with. And not with photo radar that they get a month later. By a cop pulling them over, right now. Actual license demerits that will affect their employment and insurance premiums. Consequences for their actions.

It's the people who make up their own rules of the road, then decide to enforce them themselves that are the problem. The person who accelerates to block a merging vehicle. The tailgater who thinks you are in their way, so it justifies putting everyone around thems' life in jeopardy. The person who decides it's OK to cut across 4 lanes of traffic because this is their exit. The person who decides brake checking is a proper response to you not following the rules of the road that they made up and don't tell anyone.

This is how this truck and car appeared to interact. The truck driver decided he doesn't need to obey the law and yield to a merging vehicle. I know some are saying that the car should have been more careful, and sure perhaps so. But the reason the merge law exists is because the vehicle on the highway has full view of the merging vehicle, and the merging vehicle has highway traffic behind them in their blind spot. One of these vehicles has a better chance and responsibility to avoid the accident.

What I don't get is why should anybody complain when another car is going at the speed limit and not 20kh over it? As long as he's in his lane, not the passing lane and respects all the rules. On some major highways, there's a minimum speed you have to maintain so we should even be OK with cars going at that speed... even if we don't like it.

You have old drivers, beginners and others with driving anxiety on the road... you're making it worst if you ride their bumper and lean on your horn.

I was driving first time on Autobahn 9 to Munich at approx' 100kmh, cop pulls me over and very politely told me that is to slow and causes problems, please keep up with the traffic flow. Keeping up was around 140kmh.

Not to mention putting everyone around you at risk. That's how multi car pileups happen, by not leaving enough room.

I agree, predictable means safe. You know what's predictable? Everyone driving the same speed. It may be different in Alberta, but in the GTA, we have all decided to go faster than the speed limit. It's rare for the flow of traffic to not be at least 10 over, if not 20 over. When traffic is lighter, I've had the flow of traffic hit 30 over. To drive 100 when 80% of the drivers around me are driving 130 is asking for trouble.

Trucks are governed to 110. They all go 110 (if possible). I once got a ticket for moving being at the back of a line of vehicles all going the same speed. I decided to drive 100 the rest of my drive (about 100km). I was passed every couple minutes by a semi.

Sounds like Albertans just drive slow.

Until it's the majority. Then the majority is changing the law to fit current standards when the government doesn't keep up. It's why police don't pull people over for going 115 on the 401. Because 95% of drivers are going atleast 115.

I'm by no means suggesting that people be tail gated. I keep a healthy distance between me and the car in front of me regardless of speed. I will pass someone going too slow when it is safe to do so. However if you're going to drive 90 in the far left lane, you deserve to be pulled over by the police. That's fucking dangerous.

The correct way of setting a speed limit is using the 85th percentile measure. I.e. if 85% of motorists go 120 or less, that should be the speed limit. Provided the road is designed to handle that speed.

I have one rule. You can drive however you fucking want behind me/
I used to have a 660cc Mitsubishi Minicab pickup. It was happy at 75-80kmh, maxed out on the flat at about 100km.
I drove it to Prince George to bring back patio furniture once. Passed four vehicles on the highway. One guy flipped me the bird. Hot summer day, RHD so I'm in the pass lane, guy in f150 in the right lane, both our windows down. I jest yelld over "WTF? I'd be fucking ashamed to be passed by this piss pot"
No road rage - he laughed his ass off.
You guys are right, predictability is the same, Keep steady speed, don't weave. don't react impulsively. What I taught my daughter, do what you're gonna do steadily and with confidence and assume everyone else on the road is retarded. And watch out for men in hats. Both old farts with fedoras and goobers with baseball caps.

Exceeding the speed limit may be the norm, but the roads are still designed for specific speeds. You will see the frequency of multi car crashes increase with speed. next time you hear of one, see whether it is in Ontario, or Alberta. ;)

Speeding Statistics

27% of traffic fatalities on Canadian roads are the direct result of speeding. (Carsurance.net, 2020)
Reports indicate that the main factor contributing to motorcycle fatalities in Canada was motorcycle speed, causing 12% of the deaths. (Carsurance.net, 2020)
According to the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, 40% of speeding drivers were aged 16-24. 80% of young adult passengers who were killed in a car crash were being driven by a similar-aged driver. (Carsurance.net, 2020)
In 2011, one in three speeding drivers involved in a fatal crash had been drinking. (Transport Canada, 2011)
Teens are more likely than older drivers to speed and allow shorter following distances. (Texas A&M Transportation Institute, 2019)
A survey of Canadian drivers in 2019 found that only 27% of them never drive at well over the posted speed limit.
National data shows that even a 10-mph speed increase ups the risk of a crash by 9.1%. (Fortune, 2016)
Teens do not consider driving at 5 to 10 mph above the speed limit to be dangerous. (Texas A&M Transportation Institute, 2019)

Trucks are not governed around here. They can do whatever speed they want. They often will be doing 120 in a 100 zone. Dump trucks are the worst, I've nearly been t-boned twice by dump trucks running yellow/red lights.

And a good majority of Albertans follow the rules. It's the yahoos who take shots at you while tailgating who seem impatient.

This whole pandemic has astonished me by how many people realized "what the hell am I late for?" and slowed down. And of course, the ass holes who didn't, who feel that extra 2 minutes on their commute was the 2 minutes they were going to use to develop the cure for Cancer.

The Highway Traffic Act isn't democratic. It doesn't change just because the cops don't enforce it. Because one day, they will.

*BZZZZT*

The correct way for setting up a speed limit is physics. Centripetal force. Grip on road surfaces. Distance and time between important milestones, like signs.
