KAMLOOPS — A B.C. First Nation has confirmed that the remains of 215 children who were students of the Kamloops Indian Residential School have been found on the reserve using ground-penetrating radar.

The NCTR said about 4,100 children who died at the schools are identified in death records, by name or unnamed.

The exact number of children who died remains unknown, but the Truth and Reconciliation Commission said large numbers of Indigenous children who were sent to residential schools never returned home.

As if this isn't horrible enough that there are over 4000 children whose deaths are documented. This discovery is obviously undocumented deaths and the murderers likely thought no one would ever find them. I don't even want to know what circumstances lead to the passing of these children. If there is a hell I hope the criminals responsible are there.

If they found this at this particular school it wouldn't be shocking that it's possible at other former school sites across the country.

And some people wonder why the government has to 'cave in' Indigenous groups on so many issues...this is why, and exactly what institutionalized racism looks like.

Residential schools and the horrors that occurred at them are one of the most egregious things we've done to the indigenous, but not the only one by far.

For some things there is no forgiveness that could ever be earned by later generations, not when an attitude like this was built into the bedrock of the new country. Some guilt can be nothing but eternal. :|

Monsters who perpetrated horrors like this all over the world. A few years back in Ireland, they found a mass grave where nearly 1000 children’s bodies were found who’s only crime was being born to an unwed mother. Between that and the child abuse, the Catholic Church is nearly a non-entity now. In Ireland!

Maybe we can’t prosecute the devils who did this but maybe we can make the Catholic Church gtfo. We want to remove the horrible legacy of colonialism? Let’s get rid of one of the enduring symbols of that regime.

I live in St. Albert, where Vital Grandin has a school, street and neighbourhood named after him. This prompted a petition to have his school renamed.

This ties right into what I've been writing about for years now-how do we remember people like these whose actions made it possible for us to live here? Are all our heritage, everything that makes us who we are, all the positive and negative experiences we've had morally tainted by association?

Vital Grandin not only participated in the residential school system, but also in the development of Franco-Albertan culture, the birth and growth of many central Alberta communities, and prominent regional cultures such as that of Ukrainian Canadians on the Prairies. How do we remember that? Can we morally take any pride in it?

It's why I support restoring Indigenous lands, clearly spelling out their rights and jurisdictions in the Constitution, not to mention updating the damn funding formulas, stopping fighting judgements to properly fund Native child welfare programs, rejecting the Doctrine of Discovery and in short acting on a lot of the recommendations of the Penner Report, RCAP, the TRC and all the other inquiries, reports and writings that have discussed the problems and how we could fix them.

I am Canadian. It's all I can be. This place is the only one I can call home. But that means I have a responsibility to know these things and try to set things right. I can't fix everything on my own, but I hope I've at least done something to help.
