The first thing to learn from the past is to not worship the past. They were just people, not saints, and they were as fallible as anyone else who's ever lived. Their decisions, even on something as mundane as naming streets after each other, are not chains that later generations are obligated to be trapped in for eternity. Especially not when the very worst of their decisions led to the thoroughly unjustifiable torment, if not outright murder, of hundreds of thousands or millions of others during their own time and afterwards. The people who did these things shouldn't be made into icons, period. |

So, you are up in arms because we want to rename a street after someone who; a. was Canadian, or was at least aware Canada existed b. Wasn't a piece of shit Got it. We are learning from the past, part of that learning process is correcting mistakes that were made. Civil War, lol. Someone who is a true patriot would never advocate for an act that would destroy the country. Grow up. Realize that renaming a street in a Country where Henry Dundas never set foot in is not "Cancel Culture". |

I guess it's civil war then. Um, whose army we using? Bunch of Karens? I don't see many others up in arms over this but hey, stranger things have happened. Seriously thou, I get being upset about changing the landscape. Keeping things sacrosanct gives a sense of stability. There is a flip side to that, in that it is OPRESSIVE to the people who had no hand in or voice to that original setup. I think they earned their place at the table so if I have to pick my battle here then I am with them and not the Scottish snob. He wasn't even a British officer for Christ sakes. |

Tricks Tricks: Can someone explain to me how removing someone's name from a street = erasing history? I would have thought it self-evident. The Americas are named after Amerigo--slaver. So there goes North America, South America, Central America. British Columbia--after Columbus--slaver, murderer, rapist. So there goes BC and the country of Columbia. George Vancouver? Not to sure about him, but pretty sure we can get something on him. Oh, here we go--slave owner. So, no Vancouver. So who we got? Terry Fox ate pork, thereby contributing to the suffering of animals and factory farming so fuck him. Emily Carr? ahem...white. Must be some Haida chief? Nope--slavers. But good old Adolph ain't getting cancelled. The opposite actually. Hitler hits are WAY up. You can't through a millennial screed without his name popping up a few times. He's becoming a god. I heard that all work places are going to have to show his face for two minutes every morning. The millenials are a bunch of fucking puritans, sorry. There's no piece of art or history that they won't take their paint rollers to. |

I say we rename every street 1st St, 2nd St, 3rd St, etc and every avenue 1st Ave, 2nd Ave, 3rd Ave, etc. To make things really fun you add quadrants. Basically, we rename everything like they do in Calgary and Edmonton. But, Because our Cities are named after people, we rename our cities to things like Lake City for Toronto and Ocean Port for Vancouver and Mountain City for Calgary, and Frozen Cesspool for Edmonton, etc. Now no one, other than Patriot will be offended. Also, Post 10,000. |

It's been calculated that Britian owes Jamaica, just that island, over 3 trillion in reparations for what slavers did to their ancestors. Then there is the rest of the new world . . . So, to start the clock at the Underground Railroad is to erase history. |

You sound like one of those bleeding hearts. Almost every country on this side of the world was founded through blood and conquer, but so what? Everyone now is all of a sudden outraged at history and needs to cancel it to 'feel better'? Canada isn't perfect. But we remain one of, if not THE top destination for people wanting a better life. Everyone loves Canada and wants to come here. If all the snowflakes would take their heads out of their asses and see how good they have it because they are in Canada instead of condemning everything because of this fucking entitlement complex, then the world would be a better place. We can't undo the mistakes of the past, nor should we erase them. We can learn from them, not repeat them, and move on. -J. |
