I doubt it, I've got a nasty suspicion that China won't release either of the Michaels after this ends. They seem to delight in bullying smaller nations and will keep the screws on us for ever daring to stand up to them.

The only part of O'Toole's platform I agreed with was their China policy - we should threaten to boycott the Winter Olympics next year if they aren't released immediately after Wangzhou is.

It's time for the gloves to come off IMHO.

Try to find something else to boycott, the only people you'll piss off is the Canadian athletes.

I doubt they would be pissed off. Disappointed, yes. But they get it. It's not just about the Michaels, but Tiawan, Tibet, Uighurs . . .

So the US didn’t want Meng on its soil: sensible enough given what happened as a result of the extradition request - two innocent Canadians held hostage for years under horrible conditions and another retried and placed on death row, not to mention trade reprisals etc. Meanwhile the heiress who started this kerfuffle won’t do one day of time. Trump‘s careless observation turned out to be true - this was all about horse-trading between superpowers - but it’s been a rather sickening learning experience for us up north. Next time a similarly dubious ask for a Chinese oligarch’s relative comes in we’ll have to consider it more carefully. We’re going to suffer enough pain in our own fights with China and don’t need to add to that list.

Regarding counter-measures, I’d leave the Olympics alone. Sports boycotts should not happen in peacetime. Let’s get the Michaels home first and then have a deep think about the PRC.

The operative word is 'threaten'.

Never threaten unless you're ready to go through with it.

War might end up becoming the only option. China has become a bully, and the only way to quell a bully and force him into retreat is to give him a nasty bloody nose.

China needs the biggest bloody nose right now, and it's got to hurt.

Now how about we do something to dissuade Canadians from travelling to China at all, just so the entire country doesn't get taken hostage when the Chinese government decides to play more of their authoritarian games with us by having more Canadian visitors arrested on completely bogus charges. Why do we all have to go riding to the rescue of these fools who willingly go to countries where they know that anything can (and will) happen to them?
