You'd fire all the strikers. So who takes their jobs? There isn't 100,000 teachers in reserve somewhere. And when you introduce the new rules (no collective bargaining, no right to strike, shit wages) who are you going to attract? Quality candidates would never accept your terms of employment. No, it's no exaggeration to call your hair-brained scheme "destruction" of the system.

Most of those 100,000 teachers would return to work because they know they're not getting a better job anywhere else. As to destroying the system? If the price of having that system is periodically requiring taxpayers to submit to extortion by these teachers then maybe that system should be destroyed.

I can't see too many going back to an employer that decides to treat them like a commodity like that. Some would likely go back, having few options but I think most would move to other provinces or out of the country altogether to places of learning where their skills and training are in demand. Many others would simply look into changing careers altogether. In the end what you propose does nothing to improve the system and everything to tear it apart.

This strike has been going on all school year, since September. They want $335 million for special ed in 3 years, the Province offers $175 million. They want 15% wage increase, the Province offers 0. They just had 10% in 5 years. At least, that is what I understand. I am sure there is WAY more they want tho.

Could be Brenda. Stuff like this doesn't really hit my local news until it is already a shit storm. The timeline they present in my local media is: Negotiations start: March 2011 Court (something about class sizes, don't know if relevant): April 2011 Contract expiration: June 2011 Limited job action: September 2011 - present. Does very much seem like neither side is all that interested in resolution though. Net-zero mandate vs public sector contracts will probably cause even more pain in other areas.

Negotiation /is/ by it's nature more constructive yes. Negotiation requires the use of more tools (strikes and job actions included) when one party isn't bargaining in good faith or bargaining at all. It's only selfish to you because you can't seem to understand that workers have rights too. In this case the right to an actual contract where currently there is none.
