Post subject:  SIN from outside Canada?

I'm hoping there is some government guy in here that can help me. I'm a (born) Canadian citizen living in Greece most of my life and am thinking of moving back to Canada. I've been searching around and appearantly I need a Social Insurance Number. Can I apply for one here in Greece through the Canadian embassy or can I only do it at a Service Centre in Canada? Also the only documents I have proving I'm a Canadian is a birth certificate, a health card and a passport. Is there any other paperwork I'm going to need? Any help is appreciated.

The only way you are ever going to figure that out, and get everything done and your answers answered is to visit the Canadian Embassy and ask them.

All the papers you will need to get back to Canada to be a civilian would only be given out by the Canadian Embassy. However I think it will be a very long time before you get them.

Not entirely sure as I don't really know any Canadians that have been in your situation but I am going by a assumtion based on how Ireland does it because that is the only place I know where somebody I know had a simular situation.

You need a SIN to get a job but that's about it. If you already have a Canadian passport, it's all you need to get back in the country. Once back in Canada you can apply for one and have it sent to your current address. Odd that you have a Health card yet don't have a SIN though.

I know, I just found it odd that he'd have the HC and not a SIN card. I had a SIN card probably 9 or 10 years before I got my own HC.

once you are in the country, you go to Service Canada, and apply for a SIN. You get a piece of paper with your SIN on it, and 2 weeks later, you have your card in the mail. You can start working from the day you applied for your SIN.

Thanks everyone for all your input. I don't know how I have some documents and others I don't. That's what happens when parents do all the paperwork and then you're old enough you tell them you're planning to go back they both have heart attacks and give you the guilt trip. Lucky for me I'm insensitive and don't care what they say
Thank you all once again.

I've had mine since I was 7! 8O For some reason us little kids needed a SIN to play competitive hockey [huh]

Like others have said, if you have a Canadian passport and the money for a plane ticket, you're in.(Unless you're Lebanese and start complaining about Israel invading to deal with terrorists lobbing rockets from Lebanon)
