Im just curious as to why we have these immigration quotas to begin with. Our economy is slowing, we are losing jobs, yet we let in 250,000 a year. I just dont get it. Why?

If we let in too many in one year it can create a strain on a lot of infrastructure services, for starters.

Because most of the immigration comes from areas that the majority of the current population doesn't, as such any action taken is almost be definition racist. Which would never sit well with worldly minded liberals. So the only answer to ease their sentitivities is to open the flood gates.

Even if the demand is weak, the offer is so overpoweringly huge.

Immigration is not that easy though... It takes a lot of patience, willpower and flexibility, so the people that do come here are the ones you want.
Of course, as usual, I am NOT talking about people that come here on a familyclass visa... As everybody knows by now, that class should be changed, imho...

Not too long ago I read it has been only 50.000 or something this year

You get patience, willpower and flexibility by growing up in a specific type of family.

Immigrants are boost to the economy, not a bane. How many immigrants have you met who brought houses, cars or even TVs with them? They have to buy/rent everything they need to live once they get here. That boosts the economy in a huge way.

We have a big, nearly empty country. I say double the quota. My only provision would be that they aren't allowed to immigrate to the big three cities (Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver). Make them spread out to other cities and towns and open the doors.

Our country will be much better for it, unless of course you're a bigot who doesn't like brown people...

Herbert Grubel of the Fraser Institute has shown that overall immigrants don't earn enough to pay for the public services they receive. What he forgets to say though is that the Canadian government could tax the excess profits employers reap from lower wages that immigration provokes.

Have more babies then. Right now!
Put a job posting thru Manpower last year and got more CVs from outside the country than inside. Show's who's willing to move North and work for an honest wage and who'd rather snivel on EI hoping for $20 an hour.
