WTF? You have to be a citizen to work for the government. How can a 6-month immigrant get a job like that??

Actually you don't have to be to work in all parts of the government. In fact a number of police services in our major cities don't even require their officers to be Citizens. Imagine that, you law enforcement is being handled by foreigners! I have no problem with foreigners, but allowing them to enforce laws of a country they are not citizens of just seems kind of whacked!

What gets me more about this is assuring the persons reliability. All you have for background checks is 6 months you can confirm and the rest hinges on the fact he provided a police good conduct certificate from India which, without going into detail, I know are pretty bogus in a number of ways and not totally reliable.

You ahve to be a citizen to work for as a border patrol guard. believe me, I am not a citizen, and they wouldn't even hire me for the provincial elections, thinking I am not allowed to work for the government as a non-citizen.

All these excuses for unfettered immigration make no sense.

We have hundreds of thousands coming in, no extra hospitals, no extra jobs.

We should scale back and accept those that can look after themselves and don't burden our infrastructure further. Either that or buils up the infrastructure to accomodate the newcomers.

This and all the bogus refugee claims do my head in.

Put it this way, I'm not betting on a few more million East Indians and Chinese making my pension fatter.

Maybe there aren't many great jobs in your neck of the woods, but I bet I could visit the Service Canada website and find jobs in any city in the country. The problem is that most are unskilled and don't pay all that great (if you're lucky maybe $30,000 a year).

http://www.jobbank.gc.ca/intro_eng.aspx

Those unskilled jobs are the ones most immigrants wind up with, usually because the immigration officer overseas didn't bother to tell them that their qualifications and experience wouldn't mean jackshit once they set foot in Canada. So they wind up working at 7/11s and/or driving taxi and/or working in a restaurant.

And you can bet that each and everyone of those poor saps is paying towards your CPP by deductions from their paychecks, not to mention paying taxes. They also stimulate the economy by renting apratments/buying homes (and all the stuff that goes inside one), as well as vehicles, clothing, food, etc. Immigration not only helps grow our population, it grows our economy.

I do agree we need to build more infrastructure to accommodate both Canadians and immigrants, but that's a whole other discussion.

Agreed. My industry is very heavy with immigrants, immigrants that filled a lot of open vacancies when job vacancies grew faster then we were producing graduates.

People who are not citizens. Thought I made that clear. So permanent residents, they are not citizens and have sworn no loyalty to Canada. I'm not being prejudice here, the fact of the matter is until they make the commitment to Canada they are not Canadians and are still citizens of a foreign country, therefore, foreigners who reside legally in Canada.

I have no problem with them working or living here, I love the culture they add. However in certain jobs, like upholding our laws and protecting the country I feel there needs to be more of a commitment than being allowed to live here.

As for the police services, I know there are others but I don't have time to go through them all for you sorry.

Regina:

"Citizenship

Actually I worked for immigration overseas and at least at our office we were telling them their credentials might not get carried over. However they still got points for them. Plus most would still prefer to take the chance and immigrate rather than stay where they are.

And yes, Economic stimulation of a country that is not replacing its workforce through domestic birthrates is certainly one way immigration is helping this country.

My kid gave the whine about East Indians living 12 in a house, etc. etc.
Had to explain how they charge them all rent, use the rent to pay down the mortgage and lend the others down payments to do it again.
So your E.I. buddy didn't use any 'brown advantage', he used the system, now he's buying his 3rd house.
You on the other hand have six people couch surfing and you're paying their rent you moron. You aren't being nice, you're being a freaking fool and they're USING you.
He didn't grasp the concept....

It is not up to the Embassy to tell that to the immigrant. It is for them to do their homework (if I could, why can't someone else? I knew exactly where to turn to to get credentials checked and validated, AND who to pay to write an exam), ot their immigration consultant to tell them.
The Embassy (or government) gives most points to highest educated. That they end up in a taxi because they are either too stupid or too lazy to find out what to do, or to find out they cannot work as a doctor with their Pakistani diploma, is their own fault.
You should find out that stuff BEFORE you apply, not when you are miserable because you cannot work in your field.
A Dutch educated engineer is not allowed to call himself engineer. Until he works in his field for a year, and he can write the required exam. It is what it is. You don't HAVE to come here.

Of course you do.. don't you blame them for everything?
It might interest you to know that more immigrants were allowed into this country, and from countries that previously were not allowed during the mulroney years.
mulroney raised the bar to allow more in.... and he got two back to back majorities out of it.

OF course CIC does not HAVE to tell them. But it takes 2 seconds to say "BTW you won't be able to XXX when you immigrate." Officers can't assume or take the chance they the person knows. This way they go into it knowing. It gives them a chance to figure out how to upgrade before they get landed and leaves them no rational room to complain when they get here. Making sure applicants go in with their eyes open if part of the service CIC provides. Another thing most seasoned CIC officers will tell you is that statistically those who have spent the time and energy to develop skills and themselves personally are less likely to end up on welfare or stay in those low paying stereotyped immigrant jobs in the long run due to their higher need for achievement (N-ach) personalities.

Post subject:  Re: Immigration: Why?

And how many applicants actually TALK to immigration officers?? Only during an interview, and NOT every applicant has to attend to one. Then again, that is the second last step anyway (medical is last) before your visa is issued.

I don't know where you worked, but I can tell you Berlin is NOT reachable for applicants. Emails are not answered, the 2 hours, 3 days a week the phonelines are open, you get an answering machine. If you ask questions BEFORE you send in your application, the answer is: "send in your application, it is all part of the application process, so we will find out on the go."

So much for your story, as far as I am concerned...
