Well, after last years clean sweep by Wales (who capture a 2nd grand slam in three years) they're understandably favorites for this season's competition. With an epic coaching and development team behind them combined with an encouraging Autumn International series, we may be looking at a Lions Squad packed with Welshmen to go down to South Africa in June! England meanwhile haven't had it so bad for a while. Flopping here, there and everywhere, legendary captain now England Manager Martin Johnson has it all to do to motivate both coaching team and players to produce a set of results. It isn't that England haven't got the players with guys like Danny Care, Danny Cipriani, the Armitage brothers and so on, its just that they can't gel together a performance to save their lives at the moment. Ireland have cemented their reputation as the nearly men of European Rugby. No matter how many times Munster win the Heineken Cup, that success just can't rub off on the national team. So, enter former Munster Coach Declan Kidney to sort things out. Hot new players like Keith Earls and Johnathan Sexton have been brought in to back up the existing likes of Ronan O'Gara and co. Paul O'Connell meanwhile will want to use this Six Nations series to cement his claim to the Lions Captain spot. Scotland are like they've always been, hopeful to cause an upset, promising without being too sensational or exciting. With the likes of Ben Carins, Phil Godman and uncapped newbie fly half Ruaridh Jackson comes into the squad after impressing with some phenomenal form for his club Glasgow Warriors. France and maverick coach Marc Lievremont will seek to continue their strategy of blooding in as many players as possible. Lievremont though does fear that this process will bring more pain in the short term than glory. Be sure to watch out for Vincent Clerc, Maxime Medard in the backs whilst the sucidal trio of Jerome Thion, Thierry Duisatoir and Sebastien Chabal wreak havoc. Italy, always the junior partner in this tournament are slowly but surely getting better. They scored a coup by getting legendary South African coach Nick Mallet on board and since then, bit by bit, the Italians have clawed their way up the tree, beating World Cup Semi-Finalists Argentina and coming within mere single points of embarrassing Tri Nations Superpower Australia. As always, beware of their monstorous pack with Sergio Parrise, Mauro Bergamasco and so on.. |
