$1:
Dimitri Soudas, who was Harper's press secretary at the time, told Maclean's he was authorized to offer up to $180,000 a year but Mulcair wanted $300,000. Soudas says after he said he couldn't go higher than $180,000, he never heard from Mulcair again.

So was it capital or principle that was the tipping point?

Mulcair says he didn't take the position because of disagreements on the environment.

This should make people happy - shows that Mulcair isn't the raving socialist people think he is. Doesn't make me happy, since I don't just want to vote for another Harper.

Just a typical politician....an unrepentant opportunist. Not the first conservative from Quebec to lead a socialist party....Lucien Bouchard anyone.

Well, people complain that pols aren't responsive to the will of the electorate. Seems to me an opportunist will be far more responsive to the majority than someone standing on principle, if that principle conflicts with what the majority wants.

A conservative would say Harper stands for principles, while a left leaning pol is an ideologoue. And lefty would just reverse the two.

The main principle I want a pol to stand on is pragmatism, not rigid dogma.

He was Environment minister in Jean Charet's (a former Conservative) Liberal government. And maximizing profit it a very Keynesian thing to do. ;) Total Conservative philosophy.

If it were a Liberal philosophy, it would have to go to a committee for study first so they could tax it harder.

And bill the taxpayer for the study.

Ya, I had been feeling like that since last summer. Only now the super PACs are coming out.

I suppose that revealing this was supposed to highlight that Mulcair was far more right wing than he appears now. But all it succeeds in doing is to highlight how little the Conservatives have done in regards to protecting the environment, and instead have weakened protections for it.

IF Mulcair is secretly a bit more economically right wing than he seems, that's all good. As long as right wing doesn't all of a sudden mean keeping C51 or such.
