I do not see what the big deal is. These men have not seen the light of day for months now. They have had no communication with their families, no news, no contact with the outside world. Now instead of the normal festive homecoming that they would receive, they get tucked away for even more isolation. The world is not going to stop spinning because these sailors listen to some music while having a BBQ for an hour. I say that whoever had a problem with this BBQ is the one that should be relieved of command.

This is the UK today.
Older guy, WWII vet, raises money for the hospitals by walking in his yard.
Gofundme type stuff raises a huge pile of money.
Some guy gets the brilliant idea of a flyby for his 100th birthday.

It comes after Cpt Moore was given 120,000 birthday cards wishing him well and thanking him for his incredible fundraising feat.

Big daddy government says no no no.

The UK is an absolute cesspit of Leftist PC rampaging insanity.

Whatever the UK was, it is long gone now.

Captain Tom Moore's 100th birthday Spitfire flypast is CANCELLED 'because the Department for Transport have deemed it non-essential travel'

Flypast to celebrate Captain Tom Moore's 100th birthday has been cancelled
Cpt Tom turns 100 on Thursday, April 30, after raising £29 million for the NHS
Mark 9 Spitfire named The Spirit Of Kent supposed to fly over Capt Tom's home
The Department of Transport banned the flypast citing concerns over crowds

Would AIP technology be a way for Canada to beef up its Arctic defences?

Probably not. We’re not going to prioritize such spending any time soon.

It's interesting technology to say the least and I'd like to see us use it. But before we signs off on any of these AIP technologies I'd like to see the range of these vessels extended by a considerable amount so they could be used by a blue water Navy as an offensive weapon.

Here's an interesting possibility if we went the upgrade for the arctic route. But, given the current condition and age of our subs it would basically turn into a giant money pit.

$1:
Nuclear power

Main articles: Nuclear submarine and Nuclear marine propulsion

Air-independent propulsion is a term normally used in the context of improving the performance of conventionally propelled submarines. However, as an auxiliary power supply, nuclear power falls into the technical definition of AIP. For example, a proposal to use a small 200 kilowatt reactor for auxiliary power—styled by AECL as a "nuclear battery"—could improve the under-ice capability of Canadian submarines.

But, if we want to use something like a fuel cell for AIP, retrofitting our subs would be pointless and we'd be much better served if we just bit the bullet and purchased new ones.

Apparently the range that these subs can manage is increasing rapidly, still not as useful as nuclear-powered subs to a global navy like the US has for the foreseeable future but addressing a lot of our needs. I would agree about buying new, maybe from Germany. Many of these subs are already being used in cold water environments against Russian forces. Here’s one class with a reported range of 15,000 km.

The cost differential with nuclear subs is impressive:

$1:
The contract for the Type 212CD will not be formally signed until 2019, but the four subs are expected to cost Norway about $1.81 billion—significantly less than the cost of a single U.S. nuclear-powered submarine.
