A good way to hurt China would be simply to ban all sales of Huawei equipment in Canada. And start taking a goddamn serious look at Apple and anyone else who has the bulk of their manufacturing done in China, and nail them with the ban-hammer too if necessary, if this spyware issue is so serious.

But, no, the stock plans of some very rich people on Bay Street and Wall Street who make their fortunes off of sending tech industry jobs to dictatorship states in order to take maximum advantage from deplorable working conditions wouldn't like that. No, the most important people in our world wouldn't like that at all.

The cat is already out of the bag there. Most large corporations were already looking for the exits before covid hit. The last 2 years they have only accelerated this process. It will still be a decade to draw down but you will see 'diversification' and 'decoupling' being buzz words. This was the goose that laid the golden egg for the CCP and this will force them to crack down even harder and make them even more unstable.

Tick, tock.

For the Millenials, this is what hostage negotiations with Russia looked like. Russia made all sorts of claims that couldn't be proven, had show trials, held punishment over the heads of the hostages.

When negotiations finally concluded, prisoners were swapped very quickly and everyone claimed victory.

The best part of this however, is Michael Kovrig was never sentenced by the kangaroo court so China can never say they were deporting him on court orders. The only explanation is political.

More needs to be done by everyone in the free world to stand up to China now, before they get even more arrogant and complacent than they already are. Get a group together, go face to face with the bully in the room, and stand our ground until they back down and learn the error of their ways. Either that, or face consequences.

Let’s hope there are some new doubts in Beijing about the wisdom of wolf diplomacy. Xi is uniting the world against China.

One can see why HSBC were so upset by Meng’s duplicity. Misleading governments is one thing; misleading a bank quite another. Under such circumstances, a senior banker with an unblemished reputation for dishonesty might end up inadvertently telling the truth.

A little more on HSBC’s precious reputation and why this institution might have been chosen by Huawei:

$1:
Lax controls at Europe’s largest bank, HSBC, allowed Mexican drug cartels to launder billions of dollars through its US operations, an investigation by the US senate has found.

$1:
HSBC executives brushed off complaints from other bank employees, so that the problems persisted for eight years, the report says.

In addition, some HSBC bank affiliates skirted US government bans against financial transactions with Iran and other countries, according to the report.

And HSBC’s US division provided money and banking services to some banks in Saudi Arabia and Bangladesh believed to have helped fund al-Qaeda and other terrorist groups, the report said.

The timing of the releases of Meng, and Spavor and Kovrig, show China clearly saw a connection between the two, several diplomats and foreign policy experts told CBC News.

"China ... up until now, has said that there's been no linkage between the two, but by putting them on the plane [Friday night], they've clearly acknowledged that this was hostage-taking," said Colin Robertson, a former Canadian diplomat for more than 30 years.

Robertson told CBC's The House "it really was one for the other" in an exchange that was reminiscent of Cold War swaps.

...

Guy Saint-Jacques, who served as Canada's ambassador to China from 2012 to 2016, said it is impossible to ignore China, given its strength and importance in the world, but the approach should be "strategic" and "restrained."

"The message to China is simple, it's we have no problem with you being a superpower. But as long as you respect international treaties, international obligations and you don't engage in bullying tactics," he said.

I'm glad these two men have finally come back to Canada where they belong. I do hope that this does not get swept under the carpet and forgotten about when it comes to relations with China going forward.

I disagree with Saint-Jacques idea of being 'strategic' and 'restrained' when it comes to China. Stand up to them now and forcibly confront them any time they try something, and watch how fast they go back into line.

The time for kid gloves is over when it comes to China.

“I have finally returned to the warm embrace of the motherland," Meng said. “As an ordinary Chinese citizen going through this difficult time, I always felt the warmth and concern of the party, the nation and the people."

China remains a feudal society. This ordinary Chinese citizen is right at the top.

As an ordinary Chinese citizen with at least 20 million bucks worth of holiday homes in one foreign location of many. Completely barfworthy. Also note how the party is mentioned before the nation or the people - let’s get our priorities straight here.

Trudeau better go easy on the selfies with CCP stooges in Toronto and Vancouver. The country is in no mood to see more of that at the moment. Garneau sets a better tone for the future here:
