A representative of the MCB was on British TV this morning and even he said that holding this teacher is completely absurd. He also made the interesting point that rather than taking offense, the other teachers and parents should feel proud that their children are embracing their religion by using the name "Muhammed."

Ah, I dunno. You can't do anything anymore without offending someone. :?

The real issue here is that the muzzies are ginning up an excuse to flay an infidel.

Well yeah, but it's how they run their country. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they're right in their actions or anything!
Hopefully everything'll go smoothly and they'll realise she meant no harm.

Unlikely. Reason is not something those people are known for.

Would a teacher in a Catholic school allow her students to name a teddy bear Jesus? Would a child even sugest the name? Probably not because they would be surrounded by icons of Jesus. Something the Muslim kids don't have in respect to Mohammad.

If she doesn't like the laws and customs, she should just go home. No-one should expect to move to another country and expect allowances be made for their own beliefs...... right?

Right. That is why I asked if all the parents of the boys named Mohammed are going to be jailed too?

I recall a tempest in a teapot when a Latin American kid showed up at a Quebec school.....his name was "Jesus"..........

Where is Lord Kitchener when you really need him.

She did nothing wrong. The kids named the teddy bear and the SOBs are using that as a pretext to flay an infidel. No doubt this is also related to the muslim resent at being told not to kill Christians and animists in Darfur.

I don't think she did anything wrong either, Bart - but you can't have it both ways. If you expect "them" to obey our laws and customs when they move here, shouldn't we do the same when we move there?

Is there a rule or law or custom against naming a teddybear (or a child) Mohammed?

Colleagues of Gillian Gibbons, aged 54 from Liverpool, told Reuters they feared for her safety after receiving reports that young men had already started gathering outside the Khartoum police station where she was being held.
Teachers at Unity High School in central Khartoum said Ms. Gibbons made an innocent mistake and simply let her pupils choose their favourite name for the toy as part of a school project.

Sort of hard to go home when you're under lock and key sweet stuff, so you're talking apples and oranges.

Well yeah after the fact that is.

Still, she should have been a bit more aware of the culture she was teaching in. This would be like going to Kansas and saying God bless Darwin. Expect a reaction no matter how infantile and backward the reason for it is.

That is lame. There is never someone "held" over not following a law because of their religion. They are complaining though...

She is being held because kids in her class called a bear a name a lot of boys have.

She is not complaining about the fact she can't wear her tanktops and short skirts, is she?

That argument always seems to work when "they" are in "our" country.

Bullshit! How many muslims have been locked up for 'insulting' our religion? Thing is when they attack our traditions and values, we are expected to apologize and are told to be more tolerant .

They've charged her. Quite pathetic really.

While I agree with countries having their own laws and belief systems, charging Ms. Gibbons is truly ridiculous. And pathetic.

The Sudanese really aren't doing much for the perception of Islam, are they? And judging by how the media works (especially with the red-top tabloids here) the racial and religious tensions are just going to escalate as much as they did after "7/7".
