I can recall a time when people thought war with Russia was inevitable. Thats where movies like Red Dawn came from.

The late 70s and early 80s had lots of great post nuclear war movies.

It didn't happen then and I see no reason why it would now. It would make far greater sense for all the arctic nations concerned to simply agree to divvy up the resources rather then fight a costly war over them with no guarantee of getting anything out of it.

I agree, and I believe that's exactly what will happen. I'm not sure why some people get worked up about it. Never the less if Russia is going to test us it pays to let them know we're watching.

Loads of us have been saying just that very thing and Boots leads the way. In fact Streaker has also and posts that he has no objection whatsoever to Canada building up a much more committed defensive force.

Yes but as Ziggy has pointed out they can't just fly in and scoop them up. It would take a substantial effort to even break even getting those resources and a military presence greatly exceeding a few aircraft fly overs.

He knows just how difficult it is building roads and wells in that region. I suspect our reaction time for something like this would be of no real factor in trying to get them.

We could conceivably sit back and let them build the resource gathering infrastructure at great initial cost outlay while we built up a substantial defence force then simply kick them out of our country and help ourselves to the spoils.

The reason they send the bears is they were built for long transatlantic flight's and are cheaper then sending icebreakers as far as ruffling feathers go's.

Hope the newer retrofitted bear's at least have bathroom's now.
I also agree this has been happening for years, and I'm old enough to remember a red under every bed and the importance of the DEW line.

As for drilling well's,good luck with that, the technology is there but very expensive and it would have to be done by ship as there's literally no roads up there.

Tinfoil moment.

Did we shoot down one of the Russian bears last week? They story keeps changing it seems all day. Sound's like one aircraft was escorted away, then reports come out about two aircrafts. Am I the only one that caught this?

I hear they knocked 2 out of the sky thank's to the ranger's who are now equipped with SAM's instead of those useless british 303 rifles.

Were holding them back north of Tuktoyaktuk Kate and that's all that matters.

Dearie,
During the Cold War there were lots and lots of shootdowns that were publicly reported as 'accidents' and just a few years back there was a scuffle inside US airspace near Alaska when two Russian fighters crossed the line. And the stories do change as radar intercepts are interpreted and as more information is gathered.

It's not a tinfoil moment to be concerned about people on your doorstep who are armed. The flippin' Russians are not crowding Canadian airspace for the hell of it. They are there to send a message. The Russians are not expending their wealth sending those planes at you for the hell of it.

Probably more then that but we would never hear about it anyways.
Just in case though my bomb shelter is good for 6 month's.

They showed this picture on CTV saying it's from 2007. Same situation, same aircraft. The Russian aircraft looks armed to me. Isn't that a missile pointing toward our f-18?

I agree, the Russians are not wasting gas tooling around our airspace for nothing.

They are there to send a message to us.

We should hear them, and be ready to respond.

They never came into our airspace though,so what's different then the thousand's of other time's they have done this?
Why is it such a big deal now?
Obama was in town, think the media might have played on that fact just a bit?
