The gun registry was by far one of the stupidest things the Liberals ever did.

So why haven't the Conservatives killed it yet?

They don't want the vote to be whipped

if it is a free vote, 301 will pass and it will die. R u going to phone taliban Jack and tell him to let his members vote for what their constituents want?

If yes, i will phone the PM and the vote can be next week.

Pfff, they don't want it to actually die because it's so convenient for them to campaign on.

I read that Jack's pro-registry stance has killed most of the NDP's support in places the registry is unpopular, so what's the point?

Sorry Hurley, but that's a pretty weak argument. You could say that about any of the policies of an of the parties, but things still get passed.

Uh huh. Why else are they initiating their "attempt" to kill the registry in the Senate where they have less power than in the House?

Not a clue to be honest. But in the long run its not a strategy that makes sense. In the short-term it may buy them a couple of votes but how many of those votes came from the Liberals or NDP? Next to none. Most of these people would have voted conservative anyways. So to stall like this for an extended period would just serve to alienate this base and would end up costing them support.

The NDP has traditionally gotten a lot of support from prairie farmers - the sort of people who don't like having to register their guns. The NDP used to get lots of seats in Saskatchewan, for example, but have been shut out of that province since 2004. From what I've read, Layton's support for the registry was a significant factor in that.

But by opposing the much more aggressive C-301, and instead putting out S-5, the Conservatives have alienated the gun crowd, at least to some extent.

Aside from the very rare trophy examples that's trumpeted in the Libblogs, I haven't heard of any big rift with gun owners. They don't like the fact that it's still there but they also know that the other parties are for confescation.
Canadian gun owners have been between a rock and a hard place for a very long time.

I have to agree with Hurley. Send it to the senate, and let the liberal senate vote it down. it brings the gun registry back into discussions, and proves that the senate is too damned biased to make a good non-partisan decision.
