This is an old post but what the hell. One of the biggest was the staging of the flag over Iwo Jima now the truth is out it was a movie shoot . They figure they won the entire war single handed and no one else was there at all , wonder what a Hong Kong vet might say.

If you get a chance check out the "WWII History Museam" in New Orleans, apparently the Americans beat off the Japanese and Nazis by them selves. Only with a little help from the Brits on the 'easy' parts of normandy...

Some of that applies to Canadians (drunk being elected, Columbus...)
As an added, countries always rally around people who didn't really do much. Germany rallied around the Red Baron. His brother was more effective at hurting British forces.
Sure it's funny to laugh about it, but to think this is exclusive to the States is foolish.
