I have 3 large flags in my room, A Canadian, Europian Union, and the Union Jack.

For some reason I was looking at the Union Jack today and noticed that the diagnol cross is off center and doens't line up at all.

LOL, I never really noticed this before, so I went on a google search. At first I read some people just saying it was to make it asymetric, so to know which was is up.

But then i finaly found this:

Its more of a pinwheel than a diagnol cross. I found it kinda interesting.

It's cool the way they done that isn't it. I learned the way the flag was done in primary school. 8)

It should only be called the Union Jack when it's a sea on a British ship.

At all other times, like on land, it should be called the Union Flag.

The Union Flag has changed its design over the years. When Britain consisted of just England, Scotland and Wales, the flags of Scotland and England were represented. Then when Ireland became a part of Britain in 1801, the Irish flag was put onto it - which was a red, diagonal cross on a white background. That Irish flag doesn't exist anymore as most of Ireland, in 1922, broke away from Britain and became the Republic of Ireland with a new flag. But it means that the Union Flag is slightly out of date as it still has the red diagonal cross of Ireland in it.

The only British nation that's NOT represented on the Union Flag is Wales, whose flag is a red dragon on a green and white background (and the flag of Northern Ireland isn't there, but is represented by the flag of all Ireland). The reason why it isn't there is because Wales is counted as almost just a part of England, with the same laws as England, whereas Scotland isn't a part of England and has different laws than Wales and England. England and Wales are really one kingdom.

But having the red Welsh dragon in the centre of the Union Flag would be cool.
