Trailer Park Boys: The Movie Review

Although the movie was largely expected to be a prequel, the film is not and fits right into where the TV show is (Ricky and Lucy are trying to work out their relationship, Trinity is a teenager, etc). It does however, explain some of the character's history's, so if you've never seen the movie, you won't be totally out of the loop. As per the usual, the show starts with Ricky and Julian getting out of jail, this time because a guard who plays in the jail’s hockey league wants Ricky out, so the guards can beat Ricky’s team.

Ricky, of course, becomes obsessed with finding out a way to go back to prison, so he can beat the guard’s team. Julian decides to work on small scores instead of one big one, to minimize risk. Ricky, however, wants to do the ‘Big Dirty’, one big job that will put the boys on easy street. After some trials and tribulations, the boys decide to do the ‘Big Dirty’.

Despite the big ‘budget’ of a few million dollars, the movie stays true to its mockumentary origins and it still looks like it was shot on a Handi-Cam. Odds are, most of the money went to the several car crashes that occurred throughout the movie. The movie is a bit slow in the beginning, but once the boys commit to the Big Dirty, it gets pretty funny. I was worried when I saw the movie was originally rated 14A here in Alberta, thinking that most of the language (and other moral barriers that the TV show crosses on a regular basis) was stripped out for the big screen (it has since been bumped to 18A). Not that I’m a sailor, but the language (and the tone in which it is said), is hilarious. Gladly, the language is still there and there is even some T&A when the boys visit a strip club. Arguably one of Ricky’s best lines in the whole movie was, “Trin, cover your ears, f@ck you, f@ck this court, f@uck Randy, f@ck his lawyer, f@ck my lawyer, f@ck Bob’s BBQ chicken, f@ck the sun, f@ck the moon, f@ck squirrels, f@ck this chair and f@ck everybody to do with this.”
