The Vancouver Aquarium is giving up its fight to keep whales and dolphins in captivity, saying the heated public debate on the issue is hindering its conservation work.
The difference now is any rehabilitated animal that can't be released back into the wild will have to be transferred to another facility once they're healthy enough.
And any animal that can't be released back to the wild will be killed.
But we'll say 'euthanized' so we can feel better about it.

Not necessarily. There are facilities in California that would take long term care of such animals. Transport of a healthy cetacean isn't as big a deal as with some animals.
We can't move the Elephant we have at our local zoo, because it would not survive the trip.
There's no need for Vancouver Aquarium when you could see them in the wild.
They'd have the same sort of crunchy exteriors and soft centres as seals! Were the Orcas hunting or just saying what's up? Blackfish was an eye opener while there's controversy in how accurate it was one still can't deny the impact it had.

"BartSimpson" said Animals die in the wild. It is the circle of life. Mother Nature is a cruel mistress.
Yeah, but pardon me if I still take care of baby birds, injured turkeys, turtles, and etc.
Mother Nature can come discuss it with me if she doesn't like it.
Most of us do. I support a wildlife rehabilitation center that only 1 mile from me. They take all sorts of birds, and anything from a mouse to a moose. They heal what they can, and release those strong enough after. They euthanize what they can't heal, and find homes for those that can't be released.
The Vancouver Aquarium will still do their rehabilitation work, they just won't be keeping and breeding captive Belugas and Dolphins, and putting them in a 'sea world' type of display. Animals that aren't healthy enough to be released or transported might have to be killed.
I'm sorry, but that is nature, and nature is sometimes cruel. But I think keeping Belugas and Dolphins in captivity is far more cruel.

These fuckbrains would really prefer the animals just die in the wild.

Our facilities in California are being forced out of the rescue business by the animal rights whackjobs.

You seem to still have quite a few whale rescue groups and partners :
