An undersea volcano erupted in spectacular fashion near the Pacific nation of Tonga on Saturday, sending tsunami waves crashing across the shore and people rushing to higher ground. It has also prompted a tsunami advisory for British Columbia's coast.

Wow. A definite concern for nations in that area but I doubt there is any danger this far north.

No. At worst, a slightly higher tide for us.

Tsunami warnings called off for North American coast.

Quite the series of views from satellites.

Pictures and video I have seen are amazing. Also unreal that the effects were felt as far away as Alaska. 8O

There is still speculation that more eruptions might be coming in the future. Hopefully once communications are restored with Tonga we don't hear of any loss of life.

They are saying the ash cloud is lifted to 63,000 feet. Well above the height that planes can avoid it. 8O

An old negro spiritual once said "your arms are too short to box with God". Volcanos erupting every once in a while & scaring the crap out of anyone still capable of thinking are one of the Earth's more vivid ways of reminding we overly-arrogant two-legged little shits of that fact. wOOt? 8O

NASA researchers have an estimate of the power of a massive volcanic eruption that took place on Saturday near the island nation of Tonga.

"We come up with a number that's around 10 megatons of TNT equivalent," James Garvin, the chief scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, told NPR.

That means the explosive force was more than 500 times as powerful as the nuclear bomb dropped on Hiroshima, Japan, at the end of World War II.
