BALI, Indonesia - The impact of climate change plus deforestation could wipe out or severely damage nearly 60 per cent of the Amazon forest by 2030, making it impossible to keep global temperatures from reaching catastrophic levels, an environmental group
Man, yes they are harvesting wood at an incredible rate destroying the forest.
The headline:
Global Warming = 60%
Later,
Global Warming + Deforestation = nearly 60%
Well, actually,
Logging + Livestock Expansion + Drought Rainfall Decline = possibly up to 59%
Why the distinction between "drought" and "rainfall decline"?
Why does Global Warming mysteriously leave the equation as the specifics are outlined?
Where's the "Global Waming causes drought (ie, rainfall decline) in the Amazon" statement that might make this all makes sense? They certainly went into detail regarding the effect of the loss of the rainforest on global warming, so why not mention in any way the contribution of global warming to the destruction, which the title so boldly states?
jokulhaups!
It is the political event not climate though. The Brazilians are frantically clearing the rainforest to grow soybeans for biofuels......with out the GW politics---the Amazon would be safe.
The same process is occurring in Indonesia.
Blame Gore and Suzuki.

I would so love to buy you a beer and a Scotch right now and toast your good health for the New Year.
Global Warming is threatening the Amazon----no doubt.

Slash and burn farming techniques have something to account for, as well. The Brazilian government has stubbornly refused to allow sustainable farming techniques to be advanced because so much of their economy is linked to the development of the rainforest.
The primary problem with the rainforest is political and the secondary problem is economics. Fix those issues and the environment will take care of itself....what's left of it.

Well, the real problem is illegal farms. Generally, the larger farms will expand and buy the smaller farms. They lay off the workers of the small farms because, hey, the larger farms don't need as many people. Those who are laid off go off into the forest and grow crops to make a living. They aren't the best farmers and you end up with farms eroding after a few years.
But that is fixed though once the bigger farms buy that land too.
I propose a lottery. A eco extremist gets 10 tickets. A denier just 1. Sheeple get 3 and bandwagon politicians get 20.
The 4 billion picked out commit hari-kiri to save the planet.
I will predict one suggestion coming out of Bali.
The West pays Brazil $50 billion a year in perpetuity to preserve the Amazon forests.
The Congo has tropical forests. Indonesia could use the loot too.
WWFGlobal warming is in fact likely to reduce rainfall in the Amazon by more than 20%, especially in the eastern Amazon, and local temperatures will increase by more than 2C, and perhaps by as much as 8C, during the second half of the century.
But that still doesn't address the fact that deforestation is the main factor in the decline, and the WWF are just as guilty in pushing the 4% attributed to global warming as the CBC article.
