" Hmmm. This quote concerns me. You shouldn't believe that something is true just because a lot of other people do. You should believe that something is true because you've researched it at at least a basic level and agree that the conclusions are valid. If you're caused to reconsider that based on a well-written counter-point, then isn't that counterpoint something to consider and not dismiss based on merely it's opposition to some "consensus"? by hurley_108 Mon May 05, 2008 10:50 am Why are environmentalists afraid of hearing the other side of the debate? Maybe because the "Heartland Institute" fabricates the other side of the debate. Here's what some of the scientists on the list of "500 Scientists with Documented Doubts of Man-Made Global Warming Scares" have to say about the inclusion of their names on the list: I am very shocked to see my name in the list of "500 Scientists with Documented Doubts of Man-Made Global Warming Scares". Because none of my research publications has ever indicated that the global warming is not as a consequence of anthropogenic greenhouse gases, I view that the inclusion of my name in such list without my permission or consensus has damaged my professional reputation as an atmospheric scientist. I am horrified to find my name on such a list. I have spent the last 20 years arguing the opposite. I have NO doubts ..the recent changes in global climate ARE man-induced. I insist that you immediately remove my name from this list since I did not give you permission to put it there. Please remove my name. What you have done is totally unethical!! I sure don't want a bunch of liars sending information to children in Canada. This, on the other hand, IS a valid reason to be at least very skeptical of any materials from the Heartland Institute. by Chumley Mon May 05, 2008 10:50 am "spokesperson Chisholm Pothier said that the government is not taking advice from people who question climate change." I like that one too. by mtbr Mon May 05, 2008 11:17 am I sure don't want a bunch of liars sending information to children in Canada. and you're okay with people like Al Gore with his Hollywood disaster flicks preaching to Canadian kids? or Suzuki telling elementary students that all politicians who don't agree with the alarmists should be put in jail? we should start filtering out the crap from both sides if you want Canadian kids to see the truth or at least have a level playing field to make their own decisions. by Zipperfish Mon May 05, 2008 11:36 am Why are environmentalists afraid of hearing the other side of the debate? I suppose there are two sides to every debate. First instance, one side may say that that the earth is generally spherical, and the other side may say it isn't. Just because there are two sides to that debate doesn't mean that each side should get equal time. There is a lot more evidence for the former point of view than the latter. The classroom time dedicated should be reflective of this. The creationists (or intelligent design proponents) tried a similar tact when they were trying to get teachers to include intelligent design in the classroom. by Zipperfish Mon May 05, 2008 11:38 am I sure don't want a bunch of liars sending information to children in Canada. and you're okay with people like Al Gore with his Hollywood disaster flicks preaching to Canadian kids? or Suzuki telling elementary students that all politicians who don't agree with the alarmists should be put in jail? Funny that's what the so-called "Skpetics' were saying to me in a thread a couple of days ago--that proponents of AGW should be put in jail. by N_Fiddledog Mon May 05, 2008 12:08 pm I'm a skeptic. I'm not a fan of this direction Heartland is taking. It's bad strategy. It's not taking the high road. Blitzing schools with pamphlets feels too much like spam. I do disagree with teaching ideology as science though, which is what's happening right now. Kids are being scared with frightening stories of floods, and storms based on false information when they're made to watch An Inconvenient Truth. Wanna talk about lies, well there you go. If climate science is taught the kid should know both sides. My nephew is being indoctrinated into global warmism at school. I told him I thought catastrophic, human forced global warming, was a hoax. His mother called me up to give me crap, because he gets into trouble for suggesting the possibility at school. To play devil's advocate on the Heartland thing though, Heartland is not "sending information to children in Canada". They are "(sending) more than 11,000 brochures and DVDs to Canadian schools urging them to teach their students that (some) scientists (the media, and activists) are exaggerating how human activity is the driving force behind global warming". The subtle difference there is important, I think. by Blue_Nose ![]() Mon May 05, 2008 12:15 pm and you're okay with people like Al Gore with his Hollywood disaster flicks preaching to Canadian kids? Looks like they made a DVD, too: Rie Oldenburg, curator of the Narsaq Museum in Southern Greenland, and Ingibjorg Gisladottir, a guide to the Brattahlid Ruins (the original site of Eric the Red, Greenland settlement) say they were told they were contributing to a video on Norse history. Both were horrified to learn that their interviews were used to contribute to a DVD that denies the human contribution to climate change. by CanAm1 Mon May 05, 2008 12:24 pm Why are environmentalists afraid of hearing the other side of the debate? The earth has had cycles long before we came and will long after we go. They lie...and then boom that means they're wrong and you're right? What about Suzuki and Al Gore? What about the Inconvenient Truth which the British court system stated there are what? More than 31 flaws? But of course, that's not lying, that's just all good because it supports your side. by mtbr Mon May 05, 2008 12:27 pm I sure don't want a bunch of liars sending information to children in Canada. and you're okay with people like Al Gore with his Hollywood disaster flicks preaching to Canadian kids? or Suzuki telling elementary students that all politicians who don't agree with the alarmists should be put in jail? I wonder why they think then that carbon credits will help a so called unavoidable catastrophy. This is an obvious tax grab on top of a little change in the earths cycle. According to the alarmists we are done. Then why do we need carbon credits? by mtbr Mon May 05, 2008 12:29 pm and you're okay with people like Al Gore with his Hollywood disaster flicks preaching to Canadian kids?
