Is it really the military's problem anyway? Don't we have anything better for the armed forces to do? That's NOT a slag on the military AT ALL, don't misunderstand me. Having a highly skilled, trained, professional group of folks like our military filling sand bags is kind of like getting surgeons to build sandwiches at the Subway. Why don't we send in the people on welfare to fill the goddamn sandbags and let our soldiers worry about Russian subs and search and rescue and shit like that?
Civil emergencies aren't the responsibility of the military? Sorry but stuff like this always has been one of the jobs that the military assists in, after their help has been requested.

yes, even if it's just a couple of CMs of snow in downtown TO.
I'm aware that it's BECOME their job, but aren't there better alternatives? Shovelling snow and bagging sand just seems sort of "beneath" our military. I'd sooner see our tax dollars better used by making the recipients of the "brown envelope" earn their dollars and let our fighting forces worry about national defence. I don't know. Maybe someone from the military could comment.
So we should end the military's role in search and rescue and humanitarian aid, or anything not involved with military campaigns? You need to look a little closer at what the role of our military is here. This has always been one of its roles.

But WHY has it "always been one of their roles"? And no matter why, does that justify it? Just because we've always done something doesn't mean we should, does it? Police officers were historically responsible for filling out parking tickets until we discovered that we could hire parking officers, equally capable of performing said task, at a third the cost to the taxpayer and similtaneously releasing the cops from doing a job that interferes with their ability to do their REAL job. Then again, I believe in Leprechauns.

I never said anything remotely like that. You're trolling on a newbie now. When firefighters aren't fighting fires, do we send them out to repair roads? When cops are out on traffic patrol but aren't pulling people over, should they stop to pick up trash in the ditch? BUT, If the military's role is fill sand bags, then we shouldn't have a military. We should just draft the whole populace in times of war and shut the whole damn thing down in peace time.
I hope 2CER has fun.
