An Israeli raid on a flotilla of Gaza-bound aid ships brought unexpected casualties Monday, when at least 10 people were killed and dozens of others were wounded by gunfire.

In a telephone interview with CTV's Canada AM, Free Gaza spokesperson Greta Berlin said the Israeli soldiers were shooting as they boarded. She said cameras mounted on the ship recorded the violence.

"What they didn't know was there was a live camera onboard, you can see them coming off the ship and you can see them shooting," she said.

What Free Gaza didn't know is the Israelis appear to have filmed it themselves, and they put the vid up quickly on YouTube.

The Commandos were armed with paintball rifles, and side-arms to be used in the case extreme measures were called for. The commandos radioed for permission to use them. The request was authorized.

Here's some better detailed accounts of the incident.

Here's some more detail on who these "peace activists" are.

All that and still only 10 dead.

Too much restraint shown by Israel.

Pretty damning footage, the fact that the first soldier on the boat was immediately taken down gives an idea of what really transpired.

Peace activists my rear, no doubt the media is going to propagate their BS like no tomorrow.

Whether the Israelis were justified or not, this will not help their cause.

They have played right into the hands of their enemies. Not a good move. They know what these people are like and now they can't count on Turkey for anything anymore.

Too high a political price to prove they were right.

What did they think would happen when they boarded this ship? That these anti-Israel types would hug them?

Paintball guns? Man, that region just weirder with every passing day. These guys have been going at it for thousands of years now. That's why I laugh every time I hear "peace process."

If they were smart, they would have dropped to their knees, crossed their legs, and locked their hands behind their heads.

I guess they figured they would rather fight, and ten people died as a result. What they were thinking I cannot imagine.

It's not good saturn and I'm very much on the 'pro-Israel' side of this.

Bad planning, bad aim, bad mission. Very reckless and ill-thought out and just a gift to the Jew-Hating media.

Read the National Post lately? Give it a rest wiht the big, bad media picking on the poor voiceless right-wingers. Try googling Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, FOX News and check out the ratings. The "left-wing MSM" trope is getting a little tired.

I don't think you have to have any specialist knowledge on this one saturn.

It was never going to be a good thing but boarding this vessel in international waters or close enough to it to muddy those said waters was always going to be problematic.

Think about it. Whatever Israel was going to do would have been second-guessed to death by a notably anti-Israeli international media.

Boarding a large ship full of very belligerent 'passengers' with commandos descending one-by-one (officer safety?) is really bizarre.

It's like they couldn't give a flying-fuck about the political fall-out and just went in to cause as much shit as they could.

    Not good.

I read the Post Zip. The lone right-of-centre newspaper in the whole Dominion of Canada.
I also read the Globe and the Star, neither of which ever support Israel on anything.

I watch (less and less) CTV and CBC and they haven't seen a bad news story about Israel they can't run. And run.

The BBC are totally anti-Israeli and well known for it.

Give it up on the US right-wing shows. I don't watch them. I watch Canadian TV. We don't have a right-wing TV media.

I'm enjoying the off the grid coverage of this story.

    For example...

Here's a description of a video of the event on YouTube.

LetsFreeGaza — May 31, 2010 — See how we attacked them as soon as they landed on deck!!!! Look closely, we decked one of them with a crowbar!!!

Here's the video, in case you care.

The pro-flotilla guys will whine about Israeli brutality, and the 10 needless deaths publicly, but get them talking to each other, and it's all, oh look we beaned one guy with a crowbar.

Aside from boarding the ships, what other avenues were available to them to enforce the blockade?

wait until it enters Israeli waters, then sink it, with complete loss of life.

Maybe they should subcontract marine support to the Russians. :)
