Tennessee bill would jail Shariah followers

And in seeking to defend themselves, they have become like thier percieved enemy.

The actual law, hyperbole aside, simply allows the State Atty. General to investigate any organization that practices Sharia Law *AND* that is found to support terrorism. Apparently, absent such a specific law, some Muslim organizations are shielded from scrutiny even when found to be supporting terrorism. This legislation addresses that issue.

any foothold in Tennessee, as it has in the UK.

States passed laws for using English only for similar reasons.

There's a big difference between not giving Shariah legal standing (good idea) and making it illegal for people to follow it amongst themselves. (not a good idea). And if Shariah is what's causing people to do illegal acts, there are already laws against those acts, so there's no need for this legislation. But Tennessee better make sure it doesn't give other groups legal standing for their laws, like we do with Hassidic courts in Canada for instance. Doesn't give you much of a leg to stand on.
