I guarantee they were looking for an excuse to fire him before this.

Not necessarily. Being that he's a Prominent personality in a business where publicity is very important, for both the person and the company this person drawing negative publicity based upon his opinions also negatively affects the company. Sportsnet is in a competitive market and this kind of thing can be very damaging to it.

The guy should have shut his mouth/Tweets. He has the right to his opinion and overall what he said was stupid, but not really offensive. That said, he had to know that he was opening a can of worms by saying what he did and probably knew the risks of doing so.

Freedom of speech protects you from the state, not your employer.

I watch Sportsnet back home and I don't know who this guy is. I don't agree with him, but a little harsh to fire the guy for speaking his mind on a personal issue.

I hope he wins his case. Just reading the mindless blathering of the Sportsnet HR people makes we want to puke. I frickin' hate HR.

“But if I remain silent I am consenting to something I don’t believe in. I have 2,000 years of Christian history backing me up on this. I’m good with that.”

Sadly Damian, you have 2000 years of a gross misinterperatation "backing you up".

Indeed. I'm not even sure what he was trying to imply with that statement.
