Mexico's archaeology institute downplays theories that the ancient Mayas predicted some sort of apocalypse would occur in 2012, but on Thursday it acknowledged that a second reference to the date exists on a carved fragment found at a southern Mexico ruin

I'm suppose to care about a wild-assed prediction from a civilization that couldn't predict it's own demise?

Hey, on December 31st it'll be the end of my calendar! Is that a portent of the end of the world? Or maybe just time for me to get a new calendar?

That's how I see it.... they probably figured their calender was long enough and covered enough time. They were probably planning on rolling out another calender by they were wiped out.

Anybody who thinks because the calender suddenly ends means the end of the world, really need to get a grip.

And I'll help them with that grip:
    http://www.abhota.info/end1.htm

^ A list of all the various end of the world predictions that have come and gone, which all have failed to come true, dating back to 2800 BC.

In the original link, they state this second artifact seems to note something that happened, rather than what will happen, so nothing new here....
