Canada will pull out of the Kyoto protocol on climate change, Environment Minister Peter Kent said on Monday, dealing a symbolic blow to the troubled global treaty. Canada will become the first country to formally withdraw from Kyoto, which it says is bad

    It's about time.

Whew, good thing we're pulling out. We don't want to be getting Kyoto protocol preggers.

Nice to see sensibility coming back into fashion.

We don't really have much choice, because no government has done much of anything to try and reach the goals set forth in Kyoto. The penalties we would incur for not meeting those targets is in the billions.

The right-of-center Conservative government of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, which has close ties to the energy sector, says Canada would be subject to penalties equivalent to C$14 billion ($13.6 billion) under the terms of the treaty for not cutting emissions by the required amount by 2012.

"To meet the targets under Kyoto for 2012 would be the equivalent of either removing every car truck, all-terrain vehicle, tractor, ambulance, police car and vehicle off every kind of Canadian road," said Kent.

Frankly, I'm surprised no one else has pulled out...

Why would an other country pull out. The world at large knows what is at stake and knows that it is far beyond the political advantage of any individual politician.

Stephen Harper and the Republicans in America are just about the only politicians in the world who have not yet got this. The rest of his caucus is an embarrassment of toadies to Harper.

So you'd have us stay in Kyoto and pay $14 billion in penalties to other countries?

    What a waste of money.

Yes, most of the world knows what is at stake - but I can think of 14 billion reasons to leave.

I could see staying if previous governments (not just the current government) had done something to reduce emissions, but nobody did - so why pay $14 BILLION to someone else? Especially when mega-emitters like China and India have no curbs on their emissions, while some European countries (like Germany) got to reduce their emissions by simply stopping production at dozens of old Cold War era factories.

If we were still in surplus and the penalty more reasonable, then I'd say fine, pay it and stay in the Protocol - but the penalty is huge and as far I as I know, that $14 billion isn't going to stop global warming all by itself. So I say, pullout and keep the $14 billion here in Canada and use it to fund eco initiatives here instead of in other countries.

Snowball's chance in hell for that, I would guess. If only.

As I have said, this government is lying. There would be no $14 billion. Even brain dead supporters of this CPC Party should be able to grasp that.

They are lying to you about this as they have lied about almost everything since they entered the election campaign that first brought them into government.

Hey, this is a fine opportunity for you to back up one of your claims and gain some credibility.

Please cite specific instances where Harper or the Conservatives have lied and then had their lies publicly acknowledged.

    Publicly acknowledge by whom?

Anyone of note. (Meaning 'not a blogger') :P

More importantly, I'd be happy if Eureka would just cite specifics instead of a vague They lie! accusation.

What do you mean here? The 14 billion in fines for not meeting the Kyoto goals is a lie?

Effective lies are those that have not been "publicly acknowledged." That does not make them truths.

IT would not be difficult to list lies. They are a daily dose.

And, gain some credibility with whom? I have enjoyed credibility everywhere for a very long time. A few reactionaries here who do not like rationality or truth does not affect my credibility.

Kent, on the instructions of his master, is lying and you will see all the evidence of that in the media.

The rest of the world is already reacting and the reaction is not pretty.
