A trail of brawls, stabbing, road rage and car theft led Mounties to arrest five Fort McMurray-area residents Tuesday. So far, the charge count is 40, stemming from a road rage incident Monday near the Snye River.
Still sucks though. The road-ragin' white trash meth-heads could happen anywhere, but McMurray is a whole different brand of awful all by itself. Too cold, too ugly, too rude, too overall hostile. Anyone who'd want to raise a family there should go have their head examined by a shrink just for thinking it.

You forgot too expensive...
That too. Compared though to the sort of negative, gutteral sense of meanness that seems to exist up there, along with the endemic cultural coarseness, the expense of things seems to be just a bit lower on the list of bad things about the place. When you're there it's like diplaying any bit of common niceness or decency towards your fellow citizen is being actively discouraged. A typical Ft. McMurray example would be like when you're stuck in traffic and leave a gap to let someone enter in front of you it's almost guaranteed that the idiot/psycho behind you will start blaring his horn at you. It's like an unspoken part of the deal up there that you absolutely have to treat each other like shit, like it's an ongoing low-level dick-measuring contest to see who can be the alleged tough guy. It's just an all-round unpleasant and borderline nasty place to have to go to. Think of a smaller version of New York City with oil fields, the reddest of rednecks, and endless fleets of white pick-up trucks and you can visualize it a lot easier.

You could just say that a lot of Ontarians have moved there recently. Because people don't act like that in Edmonton or Calgary, and when Fort Mac was mostly Newfs it also wasn't like that either.
You're probably right about that. Goddamn foreigners (from Central Canada), ruining everything they touch! I almost always find that it's the Maritimers to be the most friendly and decent of the bunch up there. For all the growth and associated trouble there's really nothing at home in Calgary to compare with the negativeness surrounding Ft. Mac. Yeah, we have our bad spots too but it's not an unrelenting bothersome vibe hanging over everything. I feel genuinely sorry for the artistic/sensitve/gay teenagers who have to live there because it must be absolute merciless hell for them to be trapped in that kind of environment.
An RCMP constable I know moved there a few years back. He's originally from Edmonchuk and wanted a posting close to home where he knew he wouldn't be posted out of, unless he requested it himself. For all its trouble, he says it's still preferable to his previous posting at God Foresaken Narrows, a fly in shithole in NE Manitoba.

Fort Mac really isn't all that bad. Take away the high living costs, it's great if you like the outdoors. I think it has the most bike trails of any western city, and the surrounding area is full of cutlines and fire cuts. And golf courses! Lots of golf courses!
The new Deadwood.
Hell no! 35 years ago it was 'like Deadwood'. By comparison, now it is a metropolitan city.
