Canadians in hurricane Sandy's path should be prepared to look out for themselves for at least 72 hours in case of emergency, the Canadian Red Cross says
They forgot to add that having a pistol or a shotgun is a fine idea as police services are impacted during such events and calling the police for a crime-in-progress may require a wait of up to 72 hours or more for a response.
Not saying that you'll need it, but it won't hurt to have it.
"DonnaWho" said That seemed even to me like a pretty lame list of stuff.
If we were in the way and didn't already have one we would be buying a generator. Or maybe not cause we have wood.
During a very cold day a couple years ago (-47) the power in my home cut out. My eyes got wide with 'OMG, I am skaaaarrrrewwwwwwd'. I thought about going and starting the truck, and getting the pets into cages. . . 5 minutes later, the power came back. I went the next day and bought a generator good enough to run my furnace +20%. I had to get an electrician to change it from hard wired to a locking plug compatible with the furnace, but it was worth it.

Always good to have. Besides, you never know when the Zombie apocalypse may come.

Or something similar. The US Centers for Disease Control has been using the zombie meme to encourage people to prepare for a biological disaster with the argument that if you're prepared for a zombie apocalypse then you're also prepared for a pandemic.
Myself, in the event of a pandemic if anyone infected tries to force their way into my home then I'll treat them like a zombie. Just like the folks at the CDC said to.
Yep. After the big one, I would expect services on my Island to be well and truly cut for a while - and if that shaker is the really big one, issues in Seattle and Vancouver will take most if the limited resources away.
"DrCaleb" said It's winter. You'll need more than that if the lights and/or gas go out.
It may be winter here - but as recently as last week, it was +20 in Ontario. Even today, most of the Maritimes are in double digits above zero...but I do get your point.
Growing up during the Cold War and as such, developing a thorough paranoia, I always have extra gas for the car, a fair bit of food, fuel to cook with, as well as a other necessary emergency supplies.
I still haven't been able to convince the wife of the need for a back-up generator though...

I would think a week at least.

Glad I live close to the base and ships.

The Red Cross and the Canadian government have been telling people the 72 hour rule for years.
