Rolling Stone magazine retracted a widely discredited article about an alleged gang rape at the University of Virginia after a top journalism school issued a scathing report Sunday concluding it had failed to meet proper journalistic standards.
In her statement, U.Va. President Teresa A. Sullivan said the magazine article hurt efforts to fight sexual violence, tarred the reputation of the school, and falsely accused some students `'of heinous, criminal acts and falsely depicted others as indifferent to the suffering of their classmate."
This is what people who just want to "believe the women" don't seem to get.
Wenner took a combative tone, saying that despite the magazine's failures, Jackie was also responsible.
Wenner told the Times that Jackie was "a really expert fabulist storyteller." He added he was not trying to blame her `'but obviously there is something here that is untruthful, and something sits at her doorstep."
And the bullshit continues. Never blame the liar, never and consequences for false rape accusations.
And the bullshit continues. Never blame the liar, never and consequences for false rape accusations.
Right now this is official policy for anyone working for the US government or for several state governments.
In my own job if I am falsely accused of sexual harassment I will still have to answer to the charges even if they are patently false.
For instance, say I am in Victoria on vacation. On the same day Lisa and I visit Butchart Gardens someone at my job can say I sexually harassed them. At the office.
Even though this would be obviously untrue I would still have to answer to the charge. They'll still sanction me. And the person making the overt lie is protected by law against any consequences for their lie.
This is where we are as a society these days. The facts no longer matter, all that matters is the seriousness of the charges.
If someone accuses you of sexual assault and is lying, they can be punished, just as those who lie about murder or theft.... False claims actually pretty much have a similar percentage across the board for all crimes. It is illegal, it is a criminal offense, justice can be sought for it. If someone claimed you murdered a coworker Bart, or stole a fax machine, you'd have to answer the claim too. How shit works.
Now... Forgive me if I worry about worse crimes than some inconveniences for a few of the accused.
What andy doesn't seem to get is I can't take advice on what does and does not hurt the fight to end sexual violence from a guy so strongly uninterested in being involved in that fight. I don't take advice on communism from anti-communists either for pretty much the exact same reason. You have no skin in the game of ending sexual violence, andy. None.
It "hurt efforts" only because it definitely gave fuel for rape apologists to come out of the woodwork and suggest that false rape claims are more prevalent than general false criminal claims, and hilariously THIS revelation means we NEED institutional reform to even more harshly deal with the crushing dystopian nightmare us men clearly live in. The extent of your fight against sexual violence. We can't even deal with the actual cases worth shit, but yeah, let's make sure we figure out how to bring the hammer down hard on the false/unprovable stuff. Should police officers be even more hostile in their questioning to possible victims? Because it's fucked as is already. Several waves of being assumed to be a liar or a slut before you get even close to having your case in the system. And then during. And after. We gotta shut down this epidemic of women making bank off all that sweet sweet rape money.
Canada and the United States is probably not far from out own British-level surprise of police/social official ineptitude and malicious petty negligence, and here we sit cheering on this culture of initial disbelief. Truly a glorious time to be alive, if you're a rapist. At least people believe you.

Way to over exaggerate.
I don't think anyone here is a "rape apologist", just people who would like to see those who falsely accuse others face some sort of punishment.
The release of the accused name before conviction can ruin his life, which is why I prefer that ALL names be court protected until a CONVICTION is found. At that point release the convicted guys name.
I can agree with that actually; we should do so for all crimes. I know a lot of people think it's fucked we do that for kids, but I've felt if we really don't have a circlejerk obsession for mob justice and vigilantism, then we should amp it up and do the same for all until found guilty.
It's an inconvenience on par with a false accusation of murder. Shitty, and statistically inevitable in the context of crimes and people lying about them, and it's not something anyone claims does not exist or occur. Only you guys claim people are claiming it does not occur or shouldn't be acted upon.
But is it interesting that, in the so-called fight to end sexual violence, the only principled stance you guys take is this. A proud cause for sure.
"STOP MURD-" "FIRST WE MUST STOP THESE FALSE ACCUSATIONS OF MURDER!"
Sure, absolutely, punish false accusations. You guys seem to find that an easier fight than dealing with sexual violence, so that's the fight you fight.
So let's get to the brass tacks if this is the solution to sexual violence.
What is a false claim? As in, what's the line?
Most cases of sexual assault I've known were unprovable. They'd have lost in court if they made it there at all. So, what's the suggestion, past what we already do to liars? (libil, false statements, etc)
"Public_Domain" said It's an inconvenience on par with a false accusation of murder.
"Inconvenience" ??
So, spending a couple years behind bars, losing your house, job, wife, having your name always come up in a Google search next to the word 'murder' or 'rape' . . . is an inconvenience?

We're always going to have murder, we're always going to have sexual violence. You seem to be arguing we should not do anything about false accusations of sexual assault until all sexual assault has stopped. Do you see the error in that logic? We should do what we can to prevent sexual assault and put those that commit it behind bars. We should also do what we can to prevent false accusations, by blaming the liar and putting them in jail as well.
A false claim is what this woman made. She may have been assaulted, but for her to get all the details wrong means she had some sort of agenda. It's pretty simple, really. A false claim is saying an assault took place when it's clear it could not have happened. Or when the accuser claims after the fact they did not consent, when in fact they did. (case like that in the US, with video evidence. In that case the woman was actually convicted and got a stiff sentence - very unusual, she must not have had a good lawyer that could play the victim card.)
Is that sig a direct quote from 1984? I thought Orwell was smarter than that. If BB wanted the screen to be on at all times, he wouldn't have allowed an off button on it at all.

Look at how he whined when he was accused of slander....he's a f*cking hypocrite.
(written before Dr_Celeb's post) As a man, I firmly would rather deal with a false accusation of rape than have to deal with having been raped. So yes actually Shep, I'll grind my heel in with my wording; it is a completely minor inconvenience in comparison to physical and psychological torture.
Plenty of men going on about false rape claims. None here, not one, interested in discussing rape itself in any fashion that does not relate to the need to fight our oppressive secret feminazi leaders in their endless wardrive to outlaw men, or something.
You guys can stand for your personal interests and only your personal interests if you'd like. I choose not too, because there are problems in this world more disturbing and unresolved then the "plight" of straight white men, which has plenty of minders and stewards, as evidenced by you lot.

I'll discuss rape with you til the cows come home, as long as it's not cant like "women must be believed regardless".
It's not an either or choice. We can do all we can to minimize occurrence of rape, we can and should also do all we can to minimize occurrence of false accusations. We should deal with both as the crimes they are. It's not acceptable to see men falsely accused as the collateral damage in the fight against rape.
This is what people who just want to "believe the women" don't seem to get.
