What did I say that's not true? Take for example the people on unemployment insurance who could find work, but because it doesn't pay as much as their unemployment insurance they refuse the job. Of course there's the people like my stepmom. She raised 5 kids, 3 her own and 2 of her ex husband. Since...

I've tried to get back on topic but obviously no one else is interested, most of all you. I've been staying out of this hoping that people would get off this, but its not happening. There is a sweet spot where the effort put out is worthwhile to each person. I gave 60% as an example of where it coul...

Except you can't separate expenses incurred earning that income. While the taxation itself doesn't wipe it out, the marginal tax rate + expenses to earn that income make it a losing proposition. If for example every dollar you earn at work, 60 cents must be applied to expenses and if it's currently ...

There's a reason that anyone who makes more than 100k dollars a year gets strongly recommended to have their own CPA or tax attorney. It takes expertise to understand the American tax code.

Careful where you sling the insults. I'm more left of center myself than anything. Even I have to admit there's a point where I, as a single white male, will go from getting money back from the government to actually owing them. It'll probably be in the vicinity of 30k a year of income. Right now I ...

Once again, this is off topic. With regards to people keeping their incomes artificially low, it does happen. Companies in Scandinavian nations don't always offer big incomes, what they do offer is the company picking up the tab on stuff such as housing and cars. They do so because the tax rates the...

The reason I mentioned a flat tax is that it would discourage people from purposefully making less money so they can fall into a different tax bracket. It could be argued that the government currently rewards you for being poor by making you pay no taxes or even giving you credit for more than you p...

Perhaps I misread you then... A flat tax rate as most often proposed would be a set percentage of income, like 15%. So The rich guy would pay more, but at the same rate as someone who made less. The system as currently set up applies different rates depending on what you make. Because the rate incre...

That would be if there was a flat income tax rate. The current system is progressive so if all deduction were removed, odds are the rich would pay a higher rate than someone making 15,000 a year.

I actually have more of an American mindset, I've lived here since I was seven after all. So its not a culture gap for me. Maybe an ideology gap. I'm not saying its right to put in a mandate, I'm just saying it was fully within their power to do so except they wanted the politically easy answer. The...

I know that raising taxes is controversial, but its fully within the federal government's power from the 16th Amendment. If we can have a deduction for paying tuition to a University, or mortgage interest payments, they certainly can add a deduction for having health insurance. I doubt the Supreme C...

Everyone has their own expectations with this decision, Bart. I've heard just as many sources claiming its going to be upheld 6-3 with Roberts siding with the majority just so he can write the opinion. This entire issue is still funny cause it's only an issue because they used the word penalty rathe...

I do agree that this was not the proper venue for this lady's protest. I do believe, from an States-side standpoint, that Harper is being very moderate, or dare say even left of center in his agenda. But hey, that's because Harper would be a Democrat, or at worst an Olympia Snowe here.

I'm a Federalist. I believe Canada is stronger together than it would be apart. I'm glad Quebecois have decided to participate in the government properly again. Hopefully it endures.
