If slavery ever was reintroduced in North America it would only happen through conflict. There is no way that an attempt to repeal the 13th amendment would make it through the system. This reflects the underlying problem: the divide over slavery was a rather glaring symptom of the malaise in America...

The EU should forget the political stuff and concentrate on being a trading bloc. If it wasn't for the fact that the evils of European nationalism are just bubbling below the surface I'd say the EU was a waste of time. Bubbling under the surface you say? Hum! I'd have to say that the European Union...

My god, I do hope Harper knows what he's doing. By refusing to bow to the gender neutral lobby he may have just cost himself at least 2 votes in the next election!

Seriously, the British Embassy as well as other European Embassies are (or at least were) accepting wounded, the excuse of 1979 happening all over again isn't applicable with an Iran wanting international legitimacy. They want a legitimate election while ordering people not to come onto the streets?...

Just thought I'd point this out but the Swedish Prime Minister, Fredrik Reinfeldt, who is going to assume the rotating EU presidency next week, has urged restraint against Iran and urged against sanctions. This, remember, is a Prime Minister defending relatively good relations with Iran, not to ment...

Well, after last years clean sweep by Wales (who capture a 2nd grand slam in three years) they're understandably favorites for this season's competition. With an epic coaching and development team behind them combined with an encouraging Autumn International series, we may be looking at a Lions Squa...

I think people have forgotten the post of prime minister was purposely made weak so the monarch could always retain control over a divided legislature while the post of a president was the role of monarch diluted by a consensus of legislators. So you have a weakened prime minister with no other rol...

Yeah, I'm just pointing out that I'm not defending the system, just saying it how it is. The main chronic failure of Anglo-Saxon Constitutional Monarchies is that there is a huge gulf between the letter and the spirit of the law. In fact, in many cases, there isn't really a codified "letter&quo...

........ EDIT: I feel I must elaborate here. Ms Jean would be well within her rights, convention and the law to choose the Alliance to form a government. Convention rules that it is the party (or parties) who the Monarch or his/her representatives feel would be most fit to rule that should be chose...

Yeah, that loophole is kind of something for the Crims in Oz to decide how to deal with. We've done our bit up here.. |

There are a few funny anomalies. For example, despite a pretty comprehensive "Crims, Crooks and Convicts act 1982" (otherwise known as the "Australia act, 1982") there is a vaugue loophole which means someone can appeal to the highest court in the UK if he were lucky enough to ob...

Your argument seems to be that the individual voter not only doesn't but shouldn't have any influence over the choice of PM. That is essentially how the system by convention works. Simply put, by voting, you are giving up your right to choose the government and are effectively buying into the syste...
