The Flames are chipping away. But it's so hard to vault teams while you're in the quagmire of clubs fighting for the last couple of spots in the Western Conference playoff chase.
The reminder came once again when they dropped a 2-1 overtime game to the Phoenix Coyotes Thursday night.
The Flames would have jumped into a playoff spot for the first time this season had they beat the Coyotes, even via shootout. Instead, they ended up two points back of the Desert Dogs, and in a three-way tie with Dallas and Minnesota for ninth spot, and officially 11th due to the tiebreakers.
Now you can quantify how difficult it is to make the jump.
Prior to the action on Jan. 7, the Flames were in 12th spot in the Western Conference, six points back of eighth place.
