"The official election campaign of NDP leader Adrian Dix got off to a rocky start on Tuesday after he was forced to drop a candidate who authored a series of “unacceptable” online comments against French Canadians and First Nations.

I don't see what's 'racist' about her statements.

The First Nations extort payments from people who never oppressed them. It's true.

English is the principle language spoken in BC and is probably followed by Chinese and not French. Thus her comment on that was also true.

I guess for the NDP the truth is racist.

Meanwhile, the Conservatives will pick up a new member and probably a bunch of her constituents, as well. [B-o]

Wow. This is sort of hilarious. I just love how leftist ideologues are saying she "belongs in the Conservative Party or BC Liberals" when they refuse to acknowledge intolerance and prejudice knows no political borders.

Two things though:

1) She is running in Kelowna. Kelowna City Council in the past held a Pro Life Week and didn't allow a Gay Pride flag to fly at city hall and when they eventually did allowed a "family first" group to fly one another week. Its mostly homogenous WASP (White Anglo Saxon Protestant) with a highly motivated business community, larger retiree community of old white folks from Vancouver/Eastern Canada, and a small minority of young yuppies who go to UBC Okanagan. Financially conservative/business savvy + larger retired population + strong religious Protestant presence = an implausibility for the NDP. They didn't have a chance. She was a throw away candidate.

2) These comments aren't too shocking; at least not to me as someone who is WASP and from a rural area. She posted her comments anonymously on an online forum (hell we could have political candidates anonymously on here on CKA posting!) and then stupidly revealed her identity as a businesswoman in Kelowna a year after the comments. Still, while I don't condone the way she phrased her comments and her broad generalizations/stereotyping of the issues, its an incredibly commonly held view amongst a lot of whites. She just got caught. PC culture drives all these views into the closet.

I cannot tell you how many times I've had to CRINGE at dinner parties where my parents, relatives and a bunch of 50+ white friends (not my parents but have a lot of redneck relatives/family friends) and heard comments just like hers or worse. White people bitch about immigrants, natives, people who don't speak English well, Muslims, etc. all the time when they feel they're "safe" in closed environments. Yet at work and school these same people work with these groups they deride but claim openness and inclusion.

I do not deny the meat of what's she's saying about First Nations, but her tone is not becoming of a public official and she was rightly fired.

But yah, I always wonder if non-whites/immigrants in Canada realize what white 4th generation and older Canadians say behind closed doors. Here in Vancouver, I'm so used to dinner parties at family friends of having people bitch about immigrants almost EVERY TIME. Its a weird alternative universe from the fake guise of multiculturalism at UBC.

They dumped her. It would have been NDP racism (or anti-Quebec) if they had made an excuse. Otherwise it's Dayleen Van Ryswyk, former NDP candidate in Kelowna-Mission, who is racist/anti-Quebec. But I am sure you see it otherwise.

Really?

Did you know that Aboriginal children receive 1/3 less, often more than $3000 a year, less in education funding K-12 education.

I do not always agree with the Native Agenda, I just do not get how we can expect them to assimilate or move to the city to get a decent job and pay taxes when they do not have the tools to compete for jobs. Alot of these kids are from the poorest of the poorest communities in our country. They have the biggest percentage chance of dropping out, committing suicide or dying from violence than any other members of our population.

And I would say that us sitting on our hands not demanding that these children get the education funding they need to get a job or further education is oppression, plain and simple. How else do you justify that you and I have to pay their welfare bills because I'm not hiring people, nor are other businesses, that do not have the skills to contribute to the workplace. We pay for that with our tax dollars.

So we save $3000 a year because we can't bother to provide the same education to natives as city kids, and we pay tens (and hundreds in cases of jail) of thousands of dollars to let these people not work once they become adults. You know why they don't come to the cities and abandon their impoverished reserves? Because they would rather sit out there where they are comfortable and live off the system then have to deal with the same thing around strangers.

We also shortchange them in social services too, Aboriginal child welfare, dollar for dollar, native children are receiving sometime half of what a non-Aboriginal child would be entitled to.

But apparently asking you to fund our native kids at the same level as the rest of us Canadians is "extortion". That is sad and unless you have some other excuse for not funding one Canadian child as much as another - you are a RACIST.

You don't know what you're talking about. In those cases, it's better to keep keep your mouth shut and have people question your ignorance than to open it and confirm their suspicions.

Then move the fucking kids off the reserve. I don't know how Natives can expect to sit on their ass, not pay any taxes and expect everything to be funded like people paying a shit-load of property and sales taxes to fund their services and education for their kids.

We need to end the reserve 'system' and politicians need to start discussing Native issues like adults without the fear of being called racist at every turn.

I am not arguing. Yes lets get them off the reserve or at least a job.

But how do you do that?

You can not kidnap them or force them to move.

But you can give them opportunity through education, and enforce that opportunity through good child services practices. That starts with funding that is appropriate so that when they get to the city at 19 they have AT LEAST a grade 10 and a drivers license. They need to be able to read, calculate, problem solve and do the work.

And there are lots that do good, are well educated and pay taxes on and off the reserve. If we give more people the opportunity to come to the city and have a good future then they will.

What can we change?
We can advocate for equal funding so us employers can take someone and get them to work and off the system paying taxes and less of a risk to be in jail or on welfare.

We can advocate that all children regardless of race get access to equal social services and education dollars.

What can we not change?
You can not just arbitrarily end the reserve system.
You can not force people to move from their homes.
You can not kidnap children and assimilate them (been tried, it doesn't work well and its expensive)
You can not expect a child at any age to just pack up and move themselves.

The key is education. Can we agree that educating these young minds to the best of our ability gives them a chance to do exactly what you want? Move off of the reserve and get a job and pay taxes?

If we can agree on that - I can agree to disagree on some of the history and the political and cultural aspects of that argument. How about it? [BB]

Fine, make sure FN education is funded equally or better than SN education. But give it to the province to administer the same as any other schools, to make sure that FN kids actually learn relevant skills for the job market and life in larger society, not some bullshit ethnocentric crap. Make sure the money actually goes to education, and not inflated salaries to FN administrators who don't have a clue of what they are doing or are actually corrupt.

And we can educate every kid on reserve to PhD level, and they'll still mostly be well educated welfare bums if they stay on the reserve, because there just aren't any jobs there.

Her chances are better now that she's been kicked out of the NDP. It'd be ironic in the extreme if she runs with another party and wins!
