There's a reason why I prefer shopping at Safeway or Sobey's, because they usually still have someone working the aisles who will help you find stuff and keeps everything looking decent, not like Superstore or Wal-mart, both of which look like the apocalypse has occurred by mid-day.

When I worked mids as a meat cutter, there was a whole entire staff that stocked shelves and made sure that when the store was open the aisles were stocked and free of boxes so when the store opened that it was ready for the day.

Now, people work all day long, stocking shelves. Filling the aisles with pallets, and you have to wait 10 minutes for the thing you want to be brought out. The union has lost 50% of it's members, because the stores don't give a shit.

I did that job in the middle of the night for a few months at a Superstore when I was in university - and it royally sucked.

You had to stock almost every item in the aisle, and because they made you switch aisles every night, it was hard to remember where everything went and you ran up and down the aisle all night long. And when I had a grievance with my manager, the union at Superstore refused to help me.

The cutters had to lift bins of trimming into the hopper for the meat grinder to make ground 'meat'. The cutters never wanted to do it, so the bins got to overflowing before someone decided to suck it up and lift 100kg of meat over their head. One day, I pulled a muscle in my shoulder doing it. So I had to take a couple days off to recover.

My boss wouldn't pay me, and the union wouldn't back me up because they said I didn't fill out an injury report. I had never heard of an injury report, nor knew where they were stored.

I never came back. The union still sends me information on my pension benefits. If I retired today, I could retire on $3.75 a month.

The staff at the local store are extremely helpful, too helpful at times. I've seen them call for someone to open another till when there's only 2 or 3 people in line.
However many just aren't motivated to pick up a broom or face shelves once they finish doing what the manager told them to do, the managers truly believe it's 1950 and their job is to tell other people what to do many of them jobs they're supposed to do.
Many of the workers don't "like" their shop steward, so they won't file grievances at all and complain that 'the union' does little to help. It can't fix what it doesn't know about!
When they do have union meetings, they're lucky if 10% of the members show up and they don't spread the message of how things work... like enlist another member or contact the union local for representation. The bulk of them think they're supposed to go through their manager!
The retired guy next door used to be THE meatcutter, but now they only pack precut meats into trays or carry that goddam Alberta scab meat in the silvery vacuum pack that you can't even tell if it's rotten. No one checks the dates ever, and they just throw out meat on the expiry date instead of cutting the price or freezing it and selling it at a discount (almost all stores do that now). It's just easier, even though it is disgustingly wasteful and drives costs up significantly. Part of why the cut that sold for $15.31/kg in now $59.95/kg (or up 7.2% according to the gov't mathmeticians...)
Worst of all, it will never change because since they busted the union in the 1990s the wages are complete shit. No employee's gonna move an extra muscle or give a damn.
I rant because I used to be a union rep and the company offered such a good buyout I took it, opened my own business and saw both sides. And had to listen to the wife for 15 years about it because she loved serving people and actually cared about her job

My mini router bench fell off a shelf, and *kaboom*. Nice and flat, and will never have another router attached thanks to the melamine and MDF construction. Makes a terrible step stool too.

Trying to replace it, and get a couple accessories. T-Tracks for jig building? Nada. Measuring gauges? Nope. Maybe in August. Plane I've been wanting for 2 years? Nope. Perhaps July. Miter gauge? Nope. $400 version only. Maybe September.
