http://www.cbc.ca/canada/manitoba/story ... osity.html

While only 25.4% of Canadian tax filers give to charity, 30.4% of American tax filers give to charities, according to the Fraser Institute. Manitoba is the leading province in Canada and has been for the past six years with 28% of tax filers giving to charity, ranking 27th out of all North American jurisdictions. Maryland however, is listed as the top giver of charity in North America, with 44% of all tax filers in Maryland donating to charities.

Part of the problem in Canada is the perception and misconception that the government will take care of the poor, so why should we bother. Here is the breakdown of Canadian jurisdictions.

Man. 28.5
Ont. 27.7
Sask. 26.7
P.E.I. 26.1
Alta. 25.6
B.C. 24.1
N.S. 23.8
N.B. 23.3
Que. 22.6
N.L. 21.5
Yukon 20.7
N.W.T. 17.5
Nunavut 11.5
Canada 25.4

I don't always file my receipts, and lots of my donations don't come with one anyway.

Same here. I set aside the money I made from the fire dept since June, which was about $200 and just recently spent it all on non-perishable food and put it in the hamper at the hall.

Most of the stuff I do doesn't count towards my taxes, like buying an extra can or two and giving it to the food bank or stuffing my change in the jar by the till for MS/Cancer/whatever. Still, I'd guess I donate about $100 a year...but because it's not in a lump sum, I don't get a tax break.

For me, it's not about tax breaks but about actually doing some good...

None of my charitable contributions in Canada are deductible on my US taxes. I'm sure the same is true for Canadians who donate to US charities.

BTW: I consider Canada's support for the victims of Katrina and the folks stranded during 9/11 to make up for any and all other shortfalls.

What you folks don't give in cash, you give in heart. R=UP

Thanks Bart, back at ya.

Canadians are taxed to near death (and taxed when they die) so we have alot less to give. The public has become so coddled by the socialist dogma that they "Assume" it's the governments responsibility to help those in need. It isn't the government's job it's ours as members of Society to help those in need. The Feds job is to run this country not nanny those in need, that's the role the Church played at one time but our responsibility to our fellow man has almost disappeared because of the Socialist unrelenting whining, pandering and lobbing the Governmentn to take responsibility for every living being in Canada. We have become a welfare nation, I hope Harper changes that.

The Americans are also giving more than twice as much of what they earn also as a percentage of their GDP compared to Canada. Sure they may have lower taxes and some things are cheaper but ours are not double of what they pay.

I'm not even sure what exactly I give to charity a year I never filled it or anything. Do you have to report what you give to charity or is there any reason to do so?

Unless you are giving large sums it's not worth it but you can save up 5 years worth and claim to get a nice little return for that year just keep your receipts.

Nope. That's not why.

Luxembourg and Norway have higher per capita incomes yet lower per capita charitable contributions than the USA.

What it comes down to is that the US and Canada give more then any other nation in the world. Yet the US is considered mean and greedy and to a point so is canada do to its assosiation with the US. Next time you see some BS about how we, US and or Canada, dont do enough for the world rem. the world is doing nothing for its self.
