The Northwest Passage, once an explorer's dream, is becoming a reality. For some export-driven countries, sort of China, shorter trade routes via the Arctic Ocean could become extremely beneficial. Bearing this in mind some countries are now trying to seek for new links and new alliances. Canada keeps saying it has the sovereign right to regulate traffic through the Northwest Passage. And it doesn't care a sh-t that their closest ally, the USA, claims it is an international waterway actually. I guess Canada with time passing and Arctic ice melting more and more is going to cooperate and side more with the countries able to control arctic routes due to the relevant geographical positions, Sweden, Russia, and other. We definitely can expect some new alliances to emerge soon.
