Well let's see you fire your damn torpedo, bubba. I'm waiting. BTW, the subs floating underneath that taskforce could probably wipe you and half of Canada out by themselves.

Yeah sounds like Yankee talk right before we whomped in your ass in 1812.

Now that Obama have been elected, I can finally say Yes.

The guy is the worst nighmare of Al-Quaeda. When they could accuse Bush to be an asshole and a threat to peace and middle-east (what he is), Obama have a good reputation all around the world. Nobody would ever be agree with these fuckin' terrorists of Al-Quaeda, with this new president.

You make the good choice, USA, we, Quebec, are proud of you, and or faith in a good America is, again, strong.

We can't stomach the loss of 3,000 troops over four years so I wonder what would happen were we faced with another Normandy, Iwo Jima, Saipan, Guadalcanal, Anzio, Battle of the Bulge, or etc?

We lost 1,800 troops just training for the Normandy invasion.

Perhaps it's because the American People felt that Hitler and Imperial Japan actually did represent a threat to their liberty. The invasion of Iraq? That saved the beaches of California from an invasion, right! And of course all those WMD!

Yeah, yeah, we've heard it before; "We're going to kick your ass" and all that. Well, who ended up getting an the ass-kciking? That's right--James Madison, the Kentucky militiamen and the U.S of A.

We're coming up on the bicentennial of that ass-whomping pretty soon. Hopefully it will be a year of celebration in Canada.

Now apologize or we'll invade Alaska.

The US has many reasons to come to the aid of Canada if it is ever invaded. We deepened on a friendly boarder nation so we dont have to line it with troops. Canada has sense the mid 1800's been a friendly and valued neighbor of the US. There is no way we would stand by and watch as Canada is taken over.

Arguably, in the mid-1800's the USA and the UK got in a spat over the Russian lands sold to us in the Alaska deal. The deal was mediated and neither side was happy with the out come but the resolution contributed to peace so it wasn't so bad.

Now I do recall from a book in Victoria about some dispute in the early 1900's where the US parked a few battleships off of Victoria & Esquimalt and some local politicians motored out to the US fleet to tell them to leave and the Admiral responded by training the ships guns on the city. I do not recall the details, but it was typical of the 'gun boat diplomacy' of the time.

Boy would I like to see that mythical ref.

Sure you're not thinking of the San Juan Pig War?

Prior to the US entry into World War One there were plans to invade Canada in case we came in one the side of the Germans...which was a possibility at the time due to lingering distrust of the British and French over their siding with the Confederacy in the US Civil War of 1861-1865.

Ours is a friendship that has evolved. But I would not go so far as to assume it has been a rosy relationship for all of our years as neighbours.

***

In the current day I will note that the Canadian response to travellers stranded in Canada after 9/11 was nothing less than the act of a beloved friend and not just any neighbour.

As our allies in Afghanistan (and to a very modest extent in Iraq) the Canadians again have demonstrated their friendship.

That said, anyone messes with Canada, they mess with us. PDT_Armataz_01_40

***

The Northwest Passage is the more glaring sticking point in relations, but that's mostly due to points of international law. Were Canada to withdraw from the Treaty of the Seas then the USA would respect her territorial claims in the north and would no doubt assist militarily in asserting those claims if we we were asked.

Neat bart you brought up some stuff I didn't know about. The last time I heard we were close to invading Canada was just prior to the Civil war. It was some dispute over and Island, Pig Island I think it was called. Thanks for the info I'll have to do some checking up on the stuff you talked about would love to hear the background story about the Navy Aiming guns at the city.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pig_War

Hardly an invasion of Canada and the guns aimed at Victoria seems to be imaginary.

Average and mean income levels, and GDP per capita by purchasing power parity. The only countries in the EU that are possibly richer than the U.S. are Luxembourg and Ireland. You can bring up Quality of Life and UN HDI all you want but we are talking solely about standard of living (i.e., how "well off" one is).

There are seven EU countries that are richer than the United States: Luxembourg, Ireland, Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Netherlands and Britain.

And there are 10 European countries that a richer than the US.

Here are the world's richest countries according to the IMF (GDP per capita US dollars):

1) Luxembourg: $103,125
2) Norway: $83,485
3) Qatar: $78,754
4) Iceland: $64,548
5) Ireland: $60,209
6) Switzerland: $58,513
7) Denmark: $57,137
8 ) Sweden: $49,603
9) Finland: $46,856
10) Netherland: $46,774
11) UK: $46,099
12) US: $45,725

Canada is 14th, with a GDP per capita of $43,674, France is 18th ($42,034), Germany 19th ($40,400) and Italy 20th ($35,745).

The poorest country in the world is Burundi, with a GDP per capita of just $125.

Nice pic of the U.S. carrier and destroyers. One nuclear torpedo would take them all out with plenty of room for more. Can you say obsolete.

Huh... must have missed the writing that said Royal Navy 2015

They have the most advanced military with the ability to hit any were in the war. So if "power" is a military things, they are. I do not believe that military power in today's world makes a major difference. Economic and technologically power is true power today. Lets look at that. They have the 2nd or 1st largest economic, 2nd if you count the EU as one economy and remain near the top in cutting edge technology. That being said they are losing power fast. Massive spending, unconstitutional forging wars, a center bank that prints money and an increasing wealth state. They maybe the most powerful nation now but are running a major risk of losing that power.
