Just got this email from Peter G. MacKay of the Security and Prosperity Partnership (SPP). It may interest many of the anti-SPP'ers on this forum.

There is also an interesting sub-link to NEXUS which is designed to expedite the border clearance process for low risk, pre-approved travellers into Canada and the United States.

A05126-2007 IN REPLY TO YOUR EMAIL OF MARCH 2, 2007

$1:
Dear Mr. Tritium:

Thank you for your email of March 2, 2007, in which you are requesting
further information on Canada's approach to its relationship with its
North American neighbours, particularly in the context of the Security
and Prosperity Partnership (SPP). I regret the delay in replying to you.

I would like to clarify that there are no plans for the creation of a
North America-wide union. The SPP is an ongoing dialogue among Canada,
the United States and Mexico to address common challenges. As a
mechanism for cooperation, the SPP has no formal institutions attached
to it, but its initiatives are grounded in the common interests of all
North Americans while preserving the values of the three partners. The
SPP represents an opportunity for the governments of Canada, the United
States and Mexico to discuss common goals and identify ways for each
nation to achieve greater security, enhance prosperity and improve the
quality of life of North Americans.

I invite you to visit the Government of Canada's SPP website at
www.spp-psp.gc.ca for further information on the progress and
accomplishments of this important dialogue. Launched in February 2007,
the SPP website is a source of factual and up-to-date information for
Canadians.

You may want to consult the website of Foreign Affairs and International
Trade Canada at www.international.gc.ca for further information
regarding Canada's bilateral and trilateral relations with the United
States and Mexico.

Thank you again for taking the time to write.

Sincerely,

Peter G. MacKay
Minister of Foreign Affairs

What is that supposed to mean?

Who's values are they preserving when the public is less than informed?

Why are these "meetings" held behind closed doors, with no media interest or attention? (not that they were invited anyway)

I last read an article from Barbara Yaffe in the Vancouver Sun. "Conspiracy theorists given a free run at continental pact"

"With all the time and effort going into this worthy project, it's unbelievable that someone hasn't figured out the importance of hiring a PR agency and scheduling some media briefings to inform the public and combat the conspiracy theorists."

Translation:

She can only come up with the same end result that the "conspiracy theorist" bloggers can come up with, difference is she's gets paid for her half assed effort?

Who hired this daft cow?! She works for the media and she still comes out with this half assed statement through a poorly reserched publication!

Is this the level of complacent incompetence in the Canadian media?! What an effort!

The only people who are raising any sort of public debate or interest in this issue are the "conspiracy theorists" which all supporters of the SPP should duely thank. Obviously, if it were left up to the Barbara Yaffs of the community you wouldn't have an inkling of what was going on until you had to go out and celebrate "democracy" and its arrival.

Mr. Harper has described Canada as a northern European welfare state in the worst sense of the term. Mr. Harper spoke to a U.S. Conservative group and said that they were a light, an inspiration for canada. That's a sense -- that's speaking to values. He told the Americans that a country like Canada will never have a national identity as great as theirs. He told those same Americans that we were second rate.
