I'm not sure what you could compare cabbage town to or "t'ronno" as the local natives call it. It certainly is not like New York, New York. I think some one said Chicago and that might be a good comparison actually. I never cared much for it when I visited there. I probably would only visit again if I have to stop over or go through there.

IcedCap IcedCap: Motorcycleboy Motorcycleboy: Canadaka Canadaka: I think people just compare the 2 because they are both the respective countries largest city.
New York is New York and Toronto is Toronto, they both have things to be proud of. Yeah, but Torontonians are so arrogant they don't even bother comparing themselves to other Canadian cities. Torontonians like to think of their cousins in Calgary, Montreal or Vancouver as country bumpkins uninitiated in the ways of the world. Yet, the irony is, as Toro pointed out, New Yorkers don't differentiate between Vancouver, Toronto, Minneapolis, Winnipeg, or Peoria Il for that matter. It's all Podunk to them. At least Vancouver has mountains and ocean, Montreal style and Calgary a rodeo. What does Toronto have? if you hate it so much why work here
LOL, Calgary is looking for cops! Flash them your badge and you are hired!!! No references needed! I hear that the Calgary Police Association holds a draw for rodeo tickets every year!!

If my bestest friend in the whole wide world was meaning to directly compare Toronto to New York, he's cracked. They aren't the same city.
However, in the context of Canada and what Toronto means to Canada, it passes a rather superficial resemblance to New York. That is, Toronto is the cultural mecca of Canada, many major corporations call Toronto home, it has the concerts, stage productions, movie shoots, night life, history and landmarks that make it akin to what New York means to America.
A Mountie at the CN Tower is a traditional view of Canada much like the Statue of Liberty is to New York. I imagine that if people were pressed around the world to name a Canadian city, Toronto would be the associative word, much like NYC would be the American city most readily named by people around the world.
But a direct comparison? New York is on par with London, Paris, Tokyo and Rome. Toronto's got a lot of hustling to go on par with those cities. But what New York's identity within the US compared with Toronto's identity within Canada? Equal.
Besides, who the hell in Toronto is running around mentioning New York all the time to make the point that New Yorkers don't mention Toronto valid? Point me towards this mystery person. We're quite self-absorbed and don't have time for New York City.

Isn't there a song about this?
The rent's too high The air's unclean The beaches are dirty and the people are mean
And the women are big And the men are dumb And the children are loopy because they live in a slum
The water is polluted And they mayor's a dork They dress real band and they think they're New York
In Toronto, Ontario....
-"The Toronto Song", Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie
On a completely anecdotal note, I met a couple from Toronto in a hostel in Madrid the past summer. The woman weighed more than I do, and the guy didn't seem terribly bright, to say the least.
Elsewhere on the trip (Valencia, I think) I met a chick from Vancouver. She was hot.

I take it you've never been to Toronto. At least do some research. Toronto has a lower crime rate than Calgary.

Uhmm...Toronto City Councillor Kyle Rae is. For one. In fact, that was the opening line of my post when I started this thread....
$1: MCB Wrote:Why do Torontonians constantly compare themselves to New York City? I recently heard gay, left wing, Toronto councillor Kyle Rae defend a recent anti-car initiative the city passed as justifiable because...
"If you go to Manhattan, you'll find nobody drives down there, people take public transit. That's what we're trying to do here."
I apologize Dayseed. It appears that sentence was a bit too complex for you. In future, I shall write in crayon and use monosyllables when I learn you're on the thread.

Every city has its share of wacky politicians. This thread is just an excuse to vent your Canadian penis envy.

And what is there about Toronto to be "envious" of exactly?
It doesn't have the style of Montreal, the scenery of Vancouver, the character of the Maritimes, or the independent, vigorous spirit of Calgary (the city of the future).
And that's just in Canada!
Compare it to other similar sized, truly world class cities around the world. Sydney, Milan, Chicago, San Francisco. All these places rate far higher on people's radar than Toronto.
Toronto is nothing more than a large, cold, reasonably safe, North American city.

It was done by The Arrogant Worms. A famous Canadian western band. Actually, no... It's widely thought that though, same with "The War of 1812, which was also done by Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie. At the bottom of the Discography on their official website, they leave this little note: $1: we do not sing, or have ever sung, * The War of 1812, * The Toronto Song, * The Ontario Song, * Toronto Sucks or * Ontario Sucks. They are by Three Dead Trolls in a Baggie. You should look them up at www.deadtroll.comOther songs we never wrote include: * The Assumption Song by Vito Petroccitto Jr. www.iamvito.com * Cows with Guns - Dana Lyons * Wayne Gretzky Rocks - TPOH

I recall stop and go traffic in Chicago and some guy was on the CB, complaining about Chicago having the worst traffic----I remarked that he had never visited Toronto......He pronounced it couldn't be worse and then the CB resounded with horror stories of toronto Gridlock for about an hour....I just listened.
The general opinion of CB land was Toronto is " The parking LOT".
