Canadaka Canadaka:
Questio: do people like having the news-links desciptions on the page, or should i not display them to make the page smaller vertical size?

I figured it was good to have them, because clicking the link to find out more about the headline will most likely bring you to a site not optimized for mobile.. so at least this way you can get the jist of a story in a mobile enviroment.

I dont have an issue with the vertical size and personally i like the description on the mobile page.

but from a logistical standpoint while it would reduce the vertical size but i think it would help people who dont have an unlimited data plan from loading new pages they dont need to.

just my two cents :)

Canadaka Canadaka:
thanks for the feedback, i'm glad it loads much faster. I have the homepage down to 52460 bytes I hope to get it down another 15 KB.

It would have been nice to have GPS, but the special Telus had was ending on the 31st so i got this one.

I never want a phone that has GPS. I don't want anyone knowing where I am and if I'm that lost that I don't know where I am...............there will be no signal either.

I did some work on the CKA mobile version, I re-made the homepage so its much smaller in filesize and full XHTML valid now. It looks the same as before but its only 35KB (16KB compressed). The old version was 56KB, not valid XHTML and didn't have gzip compression.

I will be working this week on other mobile friendly pages for the forums, blogs and picture gallery to start with.

*edit*
The home/news now has working pages, so you can scroll through news links behond the 10 shown. Also clicking the "comment" button brings you to a page where you can add a comment and view comments. The news voting also works, but most mobile browsers don't support javascript.. which it requires ($Opera$ Mobile works).

I have finished the basic framework for the CKA Mobile Forums
http://m.canadaka.net/forums/

Its a very stripped down version of the forums for use on the mobile, its very lightweight so should be pretty speedy on mobiles. I will continue to work on it adding some more functionality, like the recent topics block. But there is the "Recent Topics Scroll" page.

Thanks!
When i upgrade the forums to phpbb3 I will be making a new template that is all divs rather than tables for the normal forum as well, so should be faster.

I think I will work on the Blogs next for the mobile site.

The mobile version of the forums are broken because of the forum upgrade. I am slowly updating the mobile version to work with the new forums.

All I have done is the framework and the index page, should have it done this week sometime.

I have made some progress in getting the mobile version of the forums working. You can now view forum pages in mobile view.

http://m.canadaka.net/forums/canadian-politics-f17/

topic pages are plain text right now, thats next on my list, then the posting page and then profile pages.

that page below, a typical forum page is 11KB compared to the 91KB in the non mobile version. I will try to reduce that even more.

The mobile version of the forums is now functional.

- Can now login to mobile site/forums
- Can view forums and topics
- Can create new topics and reply to topics
- Can edit posts
- Can view and send Private messages
- Can view online users
- Can view profiles
- Can view 'new posts since last visit' and 'recent topics scroll'

pages should load pretty fast on mobile devices, they are very lightweight.

Please let me know if you find something not working or any broken links.

It works but really isn't formatted that well. Using iphone and find the mac reader is a better setup.

I was able to view the site just fine on my Ipod Touch.

I will have to see if it is workable on my phone.
