More than that! 50,000 workstations and almost 9,000 servers use that infrastructure. :) Plus videoconferencing, application support for firefighters . . . huge data pipes for huge data needs.

You should see the traffic going to Youtube at any given second!

'Ping' is a packet of information that is sent from one place to another and back again, and the time is measured. It's a way to determine the 'distance' from one network to another. Along the way, a packet is transmitted from one bit of network equipment, perhaps held for a brief period because a communication channel is busy sending something else, then sent along it's merry way when the channel is clear. And that can repeat a hundred times between destinations.

'Ping time' is a way to tell the absolute speed information can travel between two places. Imagine a car and a van leaving Edmonton, going to Calgary. There is only one speed they can travel (the speed of light in a fiber, or about 30% slower than light in a vacuum), so the difference is how many people they can carry (bandwidth, or download speed) and how many times they stop for gas along the way (ping).

Ping is important to a gamer like me, because the travel time is an important factor when two players shoot at each other. 'Ping time' determines when all the events arrive at the server we are playing on. If his information reaches it before mine, the server determines he killed me before I killed him.

Fiber optic can go farther and faster than DSL or Cable modem traffic, and requires fewer 'repeater' equipment between destinations than either of them do.

Ah...if I only I was a good enough gamer to worry about ping!

So as long as no one is shooting at me, I'm good. :D Thanks Doctor! [B-o]

I used to have same speed as Bart at work for my WISP, but couldn't make a shot to home with it. Stuck with 6Mb (750Kb up)at home.
It was 'only' $5000.00 a month for that 100Mb service.
Non-bundled price for 6Mb is $58.00 mo here.
