Snowmobile -- Armand Bombardier (1907-1964)

Armand Bombardier was born April 16, 1907 in Valcourt, Quebec. His
elementary schooling was local, after that he went to Saint-Charle-Borromee in Sherbrooke. When he finished school he began work as a mechanic in Gosselin car repair shop. August 7, 1929 Armand married Yvonne Labrecque and they later had two children, Germain and Yvon. When Yvon was two years old he got very sick one night and urgently needed to go to the hospital. It was winter and outside there was one foot of snow, meanwhile the hospital was fifty kilometers north of them. There was no way to transport Yvon to the hospital and he died later that night. Armand
decided then that he wanted to invent a mode of transportation that could let people travel through the snow, that way another tragedy like this could not occur. Armand invented many things, most of which did not pass over too well with the public, but he stayed persistent. The incessant tinkering over engines and with his extensive
knowledge of motorized vehicles finally led to the invention of the first crude
snowmobile. It traveled quite slowly and weighed a great deal, a far cry from the sleek machines produced today but it was the first mode of motorized vehicle designed to travel over snow.

The Canadarm is a remotely operated appendage that can be used onboard any space shuttle to perform unique and difficult missions, that no human or humans could perform alone. So, like any invention, the Canadarm helps man to exceed his natural limitations. The Canadarm is currently onboard the space shuttle Columbia ( Oct. 16, 2000 ) where it will be used to carry out its usual tasks of launching satellites, capturing satellites in orbit for repair, and taking readings of the space shuttle itself to check for any problems before re-entry.

So many to choose from. Let me see. No, I won't say Terry Fox this time although he certainly does apply. But how about Rick Hansen? He not only wheeled around the world from '85-87, but he also started up a research centre to help people suffering from spinal injuries. What do you all think?
