We are such a sad country if our top greatest Canadians are mostly celebs. I also don't see why Avril Lavigne and other Canadian celebs top war heros who risk there lives to protect peace and stop genocide in other countries, Canadian astronaughts and the bizzilion actually worthy of the list.

It's an exercise in direct democracy. One that clearly illustrates one of its shortcomings.

Umm.. did you look at the list? plenty of non celebs, there are no celebs in the top 10. http://www.cbc.ca/greatest/top_ten/ well maybe Don Cherry could be considered one.

But Tommy Douglas, The Greatest of Them All

I voted in that, My vote went to Douglas in the end, but I almost voted for Banting, for two reasons: My eldest son has type I and my dad, when he was at McMaster did some research for Banting.

Well the list should be categorised... greatest inventor, greatest politician ( which of course would be Trudeau :) greatest humanitarian and so on.. lots of names come to mind.. and of course it would depend on which generation you ask right?

Generation surely has an impact. I was 10 years old when I saw Terry Fox run by my public-school classmates and I. Fox was my vote because his greatness was so multi-faceted. The physical accomplishment of running 30 miles/day on one leg for 4 months with lung cancer is one of the great sporting accomplishments of all time. It's impossible. Olympic marathoners couldn't do it. Mind over matter. Beyond that, that he did it all for charitable humanitarian reasons and the tremendous legacy of fundraising and research makes Fox the clear #1 for me.
