I have to speak to a reporter for a story about the perception in media etc that Canadians are dull, and I thought it sounded like a great topic to bring to the forum, esp since the interview isn't until tomorrow and it gives me a chance to hear opinions from other Vive le Canadians (*crib crib* lol) So what do you guys think--IS there a perception in the popular culture/media etc that Canadians are dull? Is it only in the American popular culture/media or is it in Canadian pop culture/media as well? And the all-important question: ARE we dull?
Not as dull as the Swedish.

I would argue that Canadians are too complacent and insular. We are way too polite and apathetic when it comes to politics.

Canadians are definitely not dull. We are portrayed that way by our media, unfortunately they don't seek out interesting stories and are motivated by sensationalism in the U.S. rather than reporting the innovative people in Canada. We have inventors creating new and interesting things everyday. We have a fellow who built and lives in a Straw bail house, south of High River, totally self sufficient, off the grid, that is just one example of not dull. Look at all the great music which has come out of Canada, that's not dull. Ralph Nader wrote two books about Canadian inventors and inventions, but again Canadians don't think of themselves as great, because we are taught not to blow our own horn. The history of Alberta has some terrific examples of colourful characters, like Sam Livingstone, our Prime Ministers have been colourful, if someone inept, the Avrow Arrow was not dull.

I could go on and on, but the truth is we are painted as dull, through the media to keep us thinking that way, boring, dull and nice, but that is not the reality of the way most of us live. Nothing boring about fighting for this country's sovereignty either, great writers and activists are hardly boring, Maude Barlow, Mel Hurtig,Susan Thompson to name some, but certainly not all.

i don't think people like the barenaked ladies, rick mercer or gerald vincent bull are boring! i think we may come across as boring because, like whelan said, news is created by sensationalism (justin timberlake & janet jackson @ superbowl??) rather than interesting stories

There's a hockey game going on for cancer right now. The guy who organized it, and the goalie for the red team; lost his finger in a zamboni accident a couple hours before face off. He made it on the ice 15 minutes before the puck dropped, taped his glove on, and duct taped his glove to his stick, and will play for 10 days like that.

How about the Yukon Quest race?

Dull? I think not.

But we don't have to force our news ethier. We don't have our J-lo and Ben, Scott Peterson or Micheal Jackson stories, because we all realize that things like that just don't matter to the average person. Some might say that's 'dull' no glitz, no glam, no 'bling' but I say I don't have time to waste if it doesn't affect me.
I don't think we're dull at all. We don't meddle in the private lives of our celebrities and politicians much, and there is a lot less screaming on Canadian television, but does that make us dull? I don't think so. I think it makes us less annoying.

The media, here and elsewhere (not just the US), paint us as rather dull and boring, but the truth is that when you look at all that Canada and Canadians have done we aren't. We are a little quiet about what we've achieved, but that does not lessen the achievements.
Absolutely not. Canada is not dull at all. It is a combination of everything exciting from around the world. Only boring people wouldn't know this
