The Vanishing Country is the only one I can think of that comes close. Mel's book is pretty good but I still like the drier stuff by Stephen Clarkson.

A couple of good ones I've recently enjoyed are WIll Gerguson's "Why I Hate Canadians" (don't let the title leave you to believe that it is anti-Canada) and Andrew Cohen's "While Canada Slept"

Canadian content?? Well if you're seeking solutions to problems, check out Jack Layton's Speaking Out

Or if you have any interest in activism, check out Naomi Klein's No Logo

I've got more books on the go right now, so I'll let you know how they turn out!

I second the vote for While Canada Slept. Supposedly there are several books of this ilk out, but, I've read this one and I found it fascinating and insightful.

I found "A Fading Power" Canada Among Nations 2002 to be interesting reading.

I recommend Weapons of Mass Persuasion by Prof. Dan Rutherford and published by the U of T press. It descrbes the lengths that were taken in the campaign designed to win public support for the invasion of Iraq.

I would also list The Fight for Canada, but that must go without saying....

I also recomend The Vanishing Country by Mel Hurtig, as well as Speaking Out by Jack Layton.

Has anybody here read anything by John Ralston Saul? An acquaintance recomended his books to me; still have yet to read anything of his...

- Shake Hands With the Devil by Romeo Dallaire
- Who Killed the Canadian Military by J.L. Granatstein
- Flames Across the Border by Pierre Berton
- Against All Enemies by Richard A. Clarke

All of these have been good summer reads.

Being a fan of Michael Moore documentaries, I also picked up Dude, Where's My Country?. I was totally unimpressed. Whereas his movies have always been informative and moving, his book was just a fountain of rhetoric and over-emotional rants. I would compare it to Web of Deceit, except written for left wing ideologues. I really had to stop reading by the third or fourth chapter, he was just pissing me off too much.
