Romeo Delaire all the way baby!

No, I haven't been following it. Mainly because of that Radio Host, Don Cherry, Shania and Avril. After entertainers made the list, I figured it would just be bread and circuses instead of actually picking good Canucks (like Banting).

Yeah I agree, although 7 of the top ten aren't so bad.

Go, Tommy Douglas!

Having 'The Greatest Canadian' as an NDP member and pro Public Health Care, can't do anything bad for the causes I support.

Anytime you have a something like this, where people can pick who ever they please, theres gonna be some bone-head entries. But as a whole, I think its great, and it accurately represents Canada. While I don't think Cherry or Gretzky deserve to be in the top ten, I do think they (hockey players) have a spot on the list. Robert, just out of curiosity which 3 out of 10 don't you agree with. I'm pretty sure I can guess 2 of them.

look up the following names, and then wonder why they aren't even mentioned:
- glenn gould
- sir william osler
- john charles fields
- margaret atwood
- carol shields
- lew urry
- bertram brockhouse
- peter north
- leonard cohen
- richard beamish
- hsm coxeter
- gerald vincent bull
- john polanyi
- gerhard herzberg
- alan davenport
- charles fenerty
- sir william logan
- bill reid
- emily carr (& the other 6)

any list of greatest canadians can't really be taken seriously if it leaves them out, imho. a lot of them have done stuff as significant as banting or suzuki (osler, urry, beamish, fields, coxeter) but have gotten no recognition at all, except by their peers in their respective communities.
Alot of these are on the expanded top 100 list. Obviously no one is going to have the exact list the want. But of the for the most part it's hard to argue 90% of the top 50, IMO.

PS. If anyone googles "Peter North" make sure the safe search is on. I thought that name sounded familliar
Yeah, I was pretty disgusted when I heard Hal Anderson had made the list. You really have to listen to his morning show to understand how disgusted I am.

Overall the top ten is pretty good though. I think they could have avoided a lot of problems by excluding people who are still alive.

My vote is for Tommy Douglas all the way. John A. runs second, but I have a big problem with him murdering Riel.
Just playing Devils Advocate here so don't get mad.

Would Louis Riel be as important or relevant to Canadian history if was not executed? Doesn't his execution promote him from rebel to martyr? In the big picture isn't his execution a good thing (Devils Advocate remeber!)?

That being said, Lous Riel is one of the GREATEST Canadians all time. Too bad he just missed out on the top ten.

I think that in life he would have done more than in death, regardless of what we think of him today.

Although, I do agree that we know a lot about him because he was executed, his life's work could have been just that, instead of his half life's work.

Then again, who knows, he may have just rotted away in a cell for the rest of his life. So really I guess it's just one of those 'that's the way it went' type situations.

Let's not forget though that it may have made him a martyr, but leading the rebellion is what made him a rebel!
P.S. If you haven't been voting, go do it! Don Cherry is number 3 currently and within striking distance of #1, nothing against the guy but... The greatest canadian?
This is a good reason to vote, especially since Cherry himself came out and said that he would not be a happy man if he was voted the Greatest Canadian. He said he's great, but not the greatest, and being a Hockey Night in Canada fan, I couldn't agree more. (Even if technically I am a European, with a French-Canadian girlfriend.)
I think the reason a great number of great Canadians missed the list is because a lot of Canadians aren't even aware of the nationality of some of them, and the fact of American media saturation in Canada(not America bashing here, but facts are facts)...which effect the Canadian youth to a large degree, I bet a lot of young people have never even heard of half the people on the above noted list...Personally I think if you look at the people who are on the list that are "great" i.e. David Suzuki, Tommy Douglas, Frederick Banting, etc. you'll see they all have a lot of characteristics in common...that never give up attitude(for one) that in the end allowed them to acheive there goals...although my reasons are entirely personal, I shamelessly vote for Sir Frederick Banting, without that man my brother wouldn't have made it out of infancy
John A was the third...He was "ok" but not great. I did mock confederation in highschool I know that it took more than one man to unite the provinces. (Not that he didn't play an integral role!)
