So, 30 years ago yesterday we lost the King of Rock 'n Roll. Anyone else out there remember that day as I do? The intial disbelief that someone so young and so great could just die at the age of 42? Watching the news that night and the papers the next morning? My God, it was all anyone talked about. My parents had every record of his, I grew up listening to Elvis. It was the first time I can recall being sad by the passing of someone I didn't even know. It was also the first time I can remember being aware of the danger of taking pills to get "up" or "down", and I can honestly say I have never taken pills as a recreational-type drug nor have I ever considered it (I found other routes to that insanity).

Right now I'm listening to Elvis - 30 #1 Hits, singing along and remembering what an impact he had on the music industry. He may have died young but he certainly has left a lasting impression that will never die. He still sounds great to me.

I'm older now than he was then...

but I was only 13 when he died - I'd have guessed at least a few years older.

I thought I was nine, but I guess I was eight.

Guess we were just mature for our age

I was less than 2 months away from 9 and maybe we were mature for our age (!) or maybe it was that he was so big that the impact of his death was very impressionable on us.

That's certainly possible.
He definitely made an impact. Both during his life, and at the time of his death.

Inveterate collector that I am, I still have a lot of original newspapers and magazines, L.P.'s, 45's, 8-track, cassettes, as well as the complete Elvis collection on cd's. I was living in McMurray at the time.
Elvis had an impact on everyone who liked any type of music. He truly did change the world. Music, fashion, attitude.
But these 'Elvis impersonators'.... :(

That's fantastic Yogi that you still have those items. I too, have kept certain news articles, magazines and other memorabilia of particular events. Looking back on these things can be quite enjoyable.

I don't care for impersonators either of any kind. Too cheesy for me, ain't nothing like the real thing...
